so what do we think of the new Rem 870 mag tube

I hope that thing is different than the prototypes
that I've seen a couple of years ago.
The design of the lock ring in the front
was made in such a way that it did not allow you
to use a mag extension.
I hope they changed their mind.

Bringing this back.

I got to hold and handle one of these yesterday at Target Sports.

I was impressed.

More so since they are now being sold with a regular butt stock, not the Blackhawk! pistol grip stock.

There is less "Material" at the front now that the barrel clamp is gone, and it points a tad lighter.

No dimples inside the mag tube, and its outside is a real smooth construction.

Very KISS.

I almost mistook it for a Mossberg.

I like it a lot.

The model I had is labeled as the "Tactical". Comes with the shorter tactical fore end, and possibly a short LOP stock. That I couldn't tell right off.

meh.
personally i am a fan of the 870 platform primarily because of the versatility and wide range of aftermarket parts and barrels. a 28" hunting gun can be easily converted to a short-barreled 'tactical' gun and vice-versa. mag extensions can be added/removed depending on the intended application and/or to match barrel length.
the different length mag tubes - requiring different barrels - is a large drawback of the Mossberg platform. but at least on the Mossberg platform you can simply buy a different length mag tube, unscrew the old one and screw in the new one and you have full barrel compatibility. not so on the soldered-in 870 design - you are STUCK with the factory config forever.

with aftermarket followers - amusingly the ones made/sold by the OP @ S&J - ive never had a mag extension bind or fail in any way. im not going to be rushing out to buy one of these and instantly cut myself off from the 870 barrel market and the versaility of the 870 platform. if i want a gun like this ill buy a Mossberg 590.

True true.

Im getting one as I intend to keep it the stock length.

But for build or swapping barrels obviously it doesn't work.
