so what goes on for precision and sniper shoots in N.S.

NSRA has a target rifle program which includes F class and also a small group of precision rifle shooters, which is essentially military sniper matches.

Pretty much everything you need is here.

Pretty active in the summer, not so much in the winter. I'm trying to get someone to go out over the next few days for some long-range stonking but there is snow in the forecast.

I'm getting into F class this year, will see you on the range no doubt.

edit: Hey just noticed you're move is done! Awesome, welcome back to the right coast! Yarmouth has a beautiful indoor range, as I'm sure you'vbe already found.

I'm working with another CGN here in NS to put together an unknown-range practical rifle match. Basically a 100 acre ranch with 10-12 stages of rifle fire 4-6 rounds per stage at unknown distances from 100 to 1000 yards in field conditions. Shooters will be given a shooting position and told there are x number of targets between two geographical features and given a start signal. Points divided by time gives hit factor. Targets will be IPSC targets at 90 degrees. LRF or milling permitted, you must hike with all you gear from range to range.

I've been trying to get some of the NB guys to show some interest in a match like this.

We do do a fair amount of our version f/f (.308 or .223, bipod, no rear bag) shooting over the summer, check out www.rnbra.com for our schedule.

That should read 1000 acre ranch, not 100.

Entry will be limited to a dozen or so for the first match to keep it simple and to make sure it is worth the effort. More participants may be added for the next, if there is one.

There is a motel and restaurant nearby for competitors and a comfy camp on the ranch for staff and awards presentation, etc.

Call it 60 rounds for a total score of 300. Not sure if we will have a straight time limit or use a timer and compute hit factor yet. Shooter input is solicited, esp from shooters who have fired practical matches like this elsewhere.

Shoot goes ahead rain or shine and the terrain is not flat, so you may have to shoot up or down hill.

Here's the latest progress.

Shooter input is solicited and apologies to various similar matches for plagiarizing their rules, etc.

Practical Rifle Match

I'm working with another CGN here in NS to put together an unknown-range practical rifle match. Basically a 1000-acre ranch with 10-12 stages of rifle fire 4-6 rounds per stage at unknown distances from 100 to 1000 yards in field conditions. Shooters will be given a map at the start position showing all the stage locations and started in a staggered order.

On arrival at the stage location, shooters will be shown the shooting stake, which is a piece of 2x2 hammered into the ground and the shooter must make all shots from a position that allows them to touch the stake with some part of their body. The range officer (RO) reads the written brief from the stage description, and then the shooter has typically between 30 seconds and five minutes to locate the targets, identify them to the RO, do range estimation, dope the wind, and make the shot. Points divided by time gives hit factor. Targets will be IPSC targets at 90 degrees or portions of same, including a moving target at a known range. LRF or milling permitted, you must hike with all your gear from range to range.

Entry will be limited to a dozen or so for the first match to keep it simple and to make sure it is worth the effort. More participants may be added for the next, if there is one.

There is a motel and restaurant nearby for competitors and a comfy camp on the ranch for staff and awards presentation, etc.

Shoot goes ahead rain or shine and the terrain is not flat, so you may have to shoot up or down hill.

This facility is not a provincially approved range and as such only non-restricted rifles will be permitted.

The match sounds tremendous. I'm in the process of setting up a long range rifle intended for such a match but I'm willing to bet I won't have my kit in time. I'm having trouble finding a Stevens or Savage .308 Winchester for purchase here in Canada. That and I can't settle on what scope to buy.

However, I'd love to help with the match if I can in any way. If I can make the dates, I could RO (I'm military and IPSC RO qualified) or help in some other way. I could also be the match photographer if you want. Ideally I'd love to shoot the match but I doubt I could couble the kit together in time.

Is the date set for the match?

Cheers,

No date set yet, this is just a troll for interest. No sense doing all the work if no one will come and shoot.

I'm sure a loaner blaster would not be a problem.

I've even considered having this a team match - one shooter, one spotter.

SIR should have lots of Stevens 200s for $309++

Hot Damn! I want in. I have a shooting partner who may also be interested. I like the idea of a team match, but I think you would have to change things up so shooter and spotter switch off- I can't think of many guys who would want to act as spotter w/ no chance to shoot.

Can I ask why the min caliber? Maybe ease of spotting hits? There are a lot of fast twist .223's out there that run with the .308's quite handily.

I actually took that right from the rules of similar matches in the USA. I'm not sure why they had a min caliber.

I see no reason why .223 shouldn't be used and will change it.

Maybe we should have teams and require the two shooters to each shoot half the stages. Then they can apply thier strengths to each stage as required. ie, wind doping experience etc.

Changes will be in red.

viper put my name down on thwe list of guys willing, where abouts is this match going to take place roughly? you may want to have a chat with one or two of the CGN sponsors about donating prizes *think hats and the like*

This really sounds great Viper. It will be interesting to see how many interested folks you get. I'm glad to see that LRF's will be allowed. I guess they probably shouldn't be, but I think it might encourage a lot a folks who aren't confident milling targets to come out and shoot.

Thanks for being so accomodating with the .223. I'm pretty confident my 80 gr. JLK load will do the job, and it means I don't have to lug my 18lb f/f gun around!

i would be shooting my purpose built stevens 200 in .300WM.
rebel if you need a rig to enter, i can loan you mine when i aint using it, if you want some practice time on it shoot me a PM i got a 100 yd shooting lane cleared on my property just bring the ammo
and for the safety nazi's out therei have a 100 acre tract behind the backstop
