So what is it with Remington 710's anyway?

A friend and fellow gunnut, who will remain nameless (you know who you are), bought one as his first gun. Short on money and time to find a good used one before hunting season rolled around, he ordered a 710, thinking better a cheap new gun then a possibly crappy used gun. First thing we did was looked at bedding it; nope, the reciever is as round as can be and has no lugs, etc. to hold onto it. The bolt has a plastic liner that it travels in, a little silicone lube helps a lot. I worked up some reloads for him using 150grn Hornady SST's; groups weren't great until the second powder choice, when suddenly every shot was going in the same hole! Gave buddy back his rifle and a box of reloads and went to the range to let him practice a bit.

First 10 shots or so are all over the place! "What the hell, it was shooting good a few days ago. Let me try." Two shots in the same hole. So I tell buddy that it is officially him. As he sets up to shoot again I ask if he can feel the trigger move, then stop, then break for the shot?
"No, I don't think so."
I tell him to squeeze the trigger slow as slow can be, and he says that now he can feel the trigger creep. Bastard goes on to shoot the next ten rounds into a dime!
After that, it didn't matter if the gun was hot, cold, clean, dirty, every shot followed the last if the shooter did his part. We later tried to load some 165's for it with mixed results, and later some 180 Interbonds, which we eventually managed to pull in under an inch.
But those 150's..... I wish I could get some of my much more expensive guns to shoot that consistently. But please understand, it is still a POS.

Cheers

I never said I needed a $6000 gun to shoot anything. Your just assuming that. I said I wanted a GOOD GUN and that I didn't want to waste my money on the cheap stuff because in the long run, it is more expensive.

I have never seen a 710 or shot one and I wouldn't buy one but how does a company sell something that is so bad?

In the long run your savage package rifle will last longer than the 710. You said that the 710 is not cheap compared to the stevens 200. the 710 is a "cheaply" made POS. Guess what, the savage rifle you purchased has the same 110 action as the stevens 200. The stevens has the same action in models 110 and 10 respectively.

How someone can make a gun and actually put all this hype into it is beyond me.

From Remingtons website and link above:

Much like the Model 700™, the Model 710™ possesses exceptional out-of-the-box accuracy, time honored reliability, crisp, single-stage trigger design, ultra-fast lock time, and the famous "three-rings-of-steel" for superior action strength.

Time honored reliability???? give me a break:rolleyes: Where did the reliability go on this one??????

makes you wonder... how did they get away with it?

when I said "as they are not a cheap gun compared to a Stevens 200" I meant that with price figures. a 710 is around $500 new, a Stevens 200 is about $360 new.

lol Thats funny as that seems to be the gun I have. :)

Ok so a 710 is like $50 more expensive and for such a pile of crap, it shouldn't be

I'm not a big fan of the 710 either. Sure they are "cheap", but they look "cheap", feel "cheap", they are just...............ewwwwww.

 In my defence it was 6 years ago before I had CGN to turn too. It did love those 150s though eh........

But I love my used Ruger. A hell of a gun.:D

Now how many folks here have actually worn out their rifle barrel so bad that they needed to thread another barrel on their hunting rifle?

Besides big bore mods of course. :D

I personally have replaced two barrels when the accuracy went away due to throat erosion. One was a 257wby and the other a 7mmstw.Of course I do shoot a lot more than most people.

anyone who is cheap enough to buy a 710 wont spend enough $ on ammo to burn a barrel out, even on a 7mm Mag

regardless, they are absolute S.HIT!

I'm planning on buying something in .308 eventually, and was aware of the existence of the 710, although I'm much more interested in the 673. However, based on what I read in this forum, I keep on getting the impression that most people here would rather have a severe crab louse infestation than a 710, but nobody ever gives any particular reason why.

I've already decided that I shouldn't even stand near a gun rack with a 710 in it in case it does something dire, but can somebody explain, in all seriousness, why it has such a bad rep?

At least if someone gives you a "severe crab louse infestation" you can get rid of it or give it to someone else. Now, if someone gives you a remington model 710, you are stuck with it for life... RIP
