so, what's so great about the 308 Win cartridge?

A few weeks ago I bought a stainless Model Seven in 308 with the intention of building a 6 to 6-1/4 lb all up 7-08 or 260 with a 22" barrel. The factory 308 barrel is 20".

Lately I've thought about sending it for a Wildcat handle with the factory 308 barrel but I'm not a big fan. A rebarrel will only cost me the price of a blank.

What would you do?...or when I have a 7lb 280AI already what the he11 am I thinking?
 
It really depends on what your goal is.
In my opinion the .308 is the jack of all trades cartridge and master of none.
If you want to reach out at distance there are way better choices.
If you want cheap shooting inside 300 yards there are better options.
All around hunting there are better options.

Having said that I like the .308 versatility
 
You have something that is less vaniller than the cough cough............tew seven tee.

Model 7 in .308win.................. sounds like a great rifle.
 
I like the 308..... everytime I try and convince myself to go another route I always have to stop and ask myself.... why?

Recoil is nothing
Tons of factory / HL options (light and fast to heavy and slow)
Ballistics and down range energy are pretty darn good

A 7-08 or a 260 won't gain you enough to warrant a build IMO, but If you just want something else, that's a different story.
 
On paper the 308 looks like a really great caliber, but visually it looks just slightly less anemic than a 30 Carbine or 7.62 Russian.
I know that's not the case, but I can't get over it's unappealing appearance, so I've never grown to like it.

Oops, how do you get a 270 Winchester cartridge in a 308 Winchester action?
 
I acquired a 308 in a Chilean flavor( 1912); very bland, likely very effective as well.
Low noise and recoil, lots of options as far as ammo selection and reloading components.
No expert, seems like an effective cartridge all-in-all.
 
The 308 is the 30/06 of the short action. It will do anything any other short action chambering will do except be cool. If one only had one rifle, a 308 would be a very good choice, but most of us here have a multitude of rifles and a 308 doesn't seem to get much attention.

A 20" 308 in an Wildcat ultralight stock topped with a FXII 4x would be a very light and handy rifle, maybe better suited for hunting here in the east.
 
I love the .308 and all of it's offspring... I currently have three and five of it's nieces and nephews...

If the .308 isn't cool in your opinion, just dress it in a James Bond"esque" tux... voila! Kool...
 
I own a good number of rifles and have no particular love for the 308 Winchester. For some reason however I currently own 3 of them. Plain, predictable, and usually accurate in a decent rifle the cartridge has no flash but usually kills critters as dead as anything else.
 
Putting a longer barrel on it and compressing powder, it's all over a 30-06 with 150-55gr loads.
Low recoil, lots of reloading supplies, cheaper factory ammo, one of my favorites I can shoot all day.
I've got a lw 308 model 600 but my favorite model 700 wears a 24" number 3, in a mcmillan scoped at 8lbs.
Don't be shy of the 308 win as it will likely surprise you to the better.
 
308 is so unrated, from punching paper to hunting my favorite cartridge all day long..
Love my Model Sevens..
Shoot as is or swap stock, give it a workout, see how you like before you consider a re-barrel..
 
I'm a big fan of the old 308 but also a fan if 6.5
Now that I got the Kimber in 308 I'm going to hold of on my rifle purchases and wait for 6.5-300 Weatherby
 
I'm thinking a 25 Souper with a 22" barrel. 308win will kill most anything you want. Seen it do its job several times by many of my acquaintances, but just can't warm up to it? If I feel the need to use a 30 caliber rifle it will be something that will drive a 180gr bullet in excess of 2900 fps.
 
The 308 is probably the second most over rated cartridge on the market. It does absolutely nothing that any number of other cartridges won't do better. It was designed for killing people when fired more efficiently from semi and fully automatic weapons than the 30-06 length cartridge. The 7-08 or 260 are both superior cartridges based on this case and the 243 is my all time favorite play around cartridge. When it comes to serious hunting, I want BCs over .5 and velocities over 3100 fps and the 308 ain't anywhere close to meeting my criteria. Hell even the 358 Win is a superior cartridge when being used for what it was meant for.
Having said this I do happen to own 5 but more for the guns they are housed in. One is a Sako AV full stock carbine, another is a Ruger RSI full stock carbine, a pre 64 Mod 88 and a post 64 Mod 100 and lastly a Sav 99 that I gave my father 40 years ago and inherited back, there might even be another one or two lurking in my vault that I have forgotten.
I don't hate the cartridge like the 270 class, but I have no love for it either. It really is just a BLAAAHHHH cartridge..........Hell I even think the 303 Brit or 30-30 is ###ier than the 308.
