so, what's so great about the 308 Win cartridge?

Shoot a large bear close range with a 6.5 and then see how popular it is . It may have great BC but it’s certainly a bit lacking in the knock down power...

Now i shoot a 165 grain copper round nose bullet at 2600FPS and even my biggest animals bang flop. :)

I get better bang flops with high velocity rounds than I do with big lead. I have smashed many bears with 400 grains at 2450 FPS yet my .260 rem drops them faster. Then again I usually shoot very high quality bullets in the big stuff that’s made to stay together.

Edit. Bullet expansion and retention that displaces energy to animal is more critical than caliber.

YMMV

For a one gun hunter there are 2 superior cartridges that balance recoil and energy, as well as the ability to find factory ammo wherever ammo is sold. You're right - the .308 and 30-06. One or the other is all you need...

I respect the 308 for what it is. Reasonably versatile, moderate recoil and usually quite accurate.
I have taken several head of game up to and including moose, and it did what I expected of it.

That being said, I have never warmed up to the 308, unless it has "Norma Magnum" behind the numbers.
Short actions mean nothing to me, so that is not a factor I consider.

I cut my hunting teeth on the 30-06, and it remains my "go-to" chambering. To the reloader, it is just
a step up on the 308 Winchester, particularly with bullets from 180 grains up.

For those who love their 308s, I say enjoy!! Dave.

There's nothing "great" about the .308. It's a middle-of-the-road cartridge for middle-of-the-road hunting, which is what most of us do.

It wouldn't even exist if the U.S. hadn't been so obtuse about service cartridge selection in the '50's.

I believe this legendary 308 just make you a better hunter, like certain make of cars make you a better driver.
Effieciency without a disporpotionated glamour.

Perfect dosage, it is in a way the predecessor ADN of the Short Magnum era. JP.

Got caught in the necrothread. Then saw some banned and gone members. Mr H, Douglas, Kevan. Nostalgic thoughts.

Not for 308 though. Bland undercooked instant rice. About all it has going for it is abundance of ammo and rifles. Got out of pretty rifles, so that wouldnt even help. If I knew then what I know now, wanted one rifle for everything....shudders......it would never be 308.

Just as the 300 Savage is the predecessor of the 308. It the 308 does nothing for me.

Ammo is everywhere and it is very capable. What's not to like?.

I was in CT and they had 19 flavours of 30-06, 9 of 270 WCF, 6 of 308 and 7mm RM, 5 of 303, 300 WM and 30-30.

These are the cartridges available everywhere.

2017. Old thread. Banned people. :)

308 is still pretty much the same. I don't think there have been any super powders developed that turn it into a 300 Magnum so yeah, pretty much the same. :)

You know whats funny? You can take a .308 to a F Class match and be secure in the knowledge that you have the worst cartridge there. OK, theres a slight chance that some poor bastard shows up with a .223 but that’s a stretch. We laugh about it; and at ourselves as well because we know that damn near anything is easier to dope wind for. Team events when they are mixed like we do it are fun. I typically double the windage that the F open guys use. Its not quite that simple; when you are guessing numbers between 1 and 10 against guys guessing between 1 and 5 you’re going to get your clock cleaned.

Luckily there are classes to protect our welfare guns for target shooting. The hunting field isnt so accomidating. ;)
