So, who else is hunting with their NR black rifles?

Just got back from our first couple days of deer hunting with the RFB -No luck so far as we only saw several does, and no bucks to fill our tags. We are going back out on Friday so we'll keep our fingers crossed.

Went out with my sub2000 this year. Didn't get anything except a bunch of chickens and 2 rabbits. Had planned on taking a deer with her but didn't see any that were close enough. Oh well, next year I guess

What ammo are you using?
I was thinking of taking the Sub2000 but am not sure I trust 9mm on a deer. I was going to put together some handloads with Hornadt xtp's if I did use it. They would be nice on the chickens anyway:)
I'm also thinking of trying the Vector and have built 3 different loads using 200gr hollowpoints but haven't been able to get out and test them yet.
I trust my RFB though and will probably just use it this year until I have time to try and chrony my handloads for the vector.

Hand loads - 115gr XTPs over 8.1 gr of bluedot, dont remember OAL right now, but I'll check in the morning. They push 1550 FPS average, just over 600 ft-lb energy so, within 50 or so yards I have no quams with a deer as this is near low end 357 mag revolver loads, and plenty of deer been taken with those in the states. Probably why I didnt get one this year, never got close enough. I also tried some 124 gr Gold dots over 7.3 gr of Bluedot with OAL og 1.085, they push about 1340 FPS average and just shy of 500 ft-lb. I have since loaded these up to 7.8 gr but have yet to try them out on the crony but I am thinking I should get about 650 ft-lb outta those. I used to use a 12 gauge for grouse and if you aimed too low there wasnt much left. With the 9mm even a solid body shot doesnt damage the body much and there didnt appear to be any expansion but cant confirm as I didnt recover any.

EDIT - The OAL on the 115gr xtp is 1.075"

Factory 124gr hollow points only get to about 1240 FPS so they would be fine for small stuff but to me they arent enough for a deer at anything beyond bow hunting range

It was alot nicer to carry on a long hike than any shotgun I have ever owned and I can carry more ammo without the weight. Plus no changing ammo for chickens or deer so fewer things to mix up

Edit: I should also add, I have pushed a 115 gr bullet as high as 1850FPS and around 800 ft-lb, but the accuracy started to fall off a bit and I was getting flames outta the ejection port so thats why I only run them up to where I do

Fortunately they are not restricted here

RFB as well. Dont have a hunting load developed for it yet so 150gr Fed Fusion will do in the interim - want to find a 150gr TSX load (if other RFB shooters may be willing to edit their post with their hunting load, much appreciated).

I'm buying a SU 16F spcifically so I can use it anywhere it is safe to do so, not restricted to a range, and it's not too expensive So what other "black" guns are non- restricted apart from the Tavor and the Robinsons, both far too expensive for me.
The Norky M14 is OK, but heavy, and the SKS is not that accurate.

Shot two (2) deer yesterday with an M14 with iron sights. Easy shots, the deer were only about 30-40 m away. That said, I'm not sure I'd like to use .308 on deer again, at least not that particular cartridge. Was shooting some cheap Federal Powershok ammo. Basically a solid lead projectile with flat nose and some thin copper plating on the bullet that would rub off if you chambered the cartridges repeatedly. The damage to the animals was overkill. The bullets passed through the hearts' of both animals, but I had spall or fragments tearing all the way down to the top of the stomach on the one deer (almost 90° to the heart). Not to mention, basically everything in that upper cavity containing the heart, lungs and throat on both animals was just a mess. If I had made a lousy shot and put one of those bullets behind the respiratory organs and into the guts, the animal would've been a write off. People can say what they will about .223 being too small for deer, but there's no denying that there's a substantial deal less meat loss with the smaller projectile and it's just as effective at killing deer with appropriate shot placement.

Well, I just got back from hunting whitetail (last night actually). I didn't get one with my Swiss Arms, but I did finish one off with it. One of the other guys got a good lung shot on a 175lb whitetail and it ran around a ridge to my right hand side. I swung around and got a fast shot at it while it was running through the bush, and a second when it fell a few yards later. Based on the entry/exit wounds, my hunting partner took out the lungs (a fatal shot alone, but it would have taken a few minutes to die) and one of my rounds (likely the first one that took it down) hit its heart, the other grazing along the right side of its chest.

I also shot and killed a really nice 8 point buck (around 245 lbs) with my .308 Win Stevens 200. One shot through the chest at a 45 degree angle, took out his heart. He ran about 20 or 25 yards before collapsing, where I put another round through him, unfortunately breaking his front right shoulder (a fair bit of meat wasted :().

I was using 60 gr Nosler Partitions in the Swiss and they went clean through (minimal meat damage, approximately a toonie sized exit wound). I would definitely use them in the Swiss Arms again.

For the .308, I was using Hornady 168gr Z-Max (yes, Zombie ammo) and they really did a number on it. Rapid expansion and significant meat damage. I managed to find most of one of the bullets when the deer was being skinned. Next year, I'll use something that will stay together a bit better, probably a Nosler Partition load of some sort, maybe a Hornady GMX or Barnes TTSX.

I have used an m14 in a sage chassis for deer and love using a swiss arms for varmints. Once the swiss arms sapr arrives, i anticipate that becoming one of my main hunting rigs

You pushing bush with that PE90, Ar180shooter? If so.. jeez, you're a sucker for punishment. Good on you for pointing that front heavy thing on target so quick!

I was going with a friend in his jeep, and one of the other guys rode in on an ATV. Definitely made getting in/dragging out easier because we could drive within 500m of our watches where the deer was killed. I also shot service CQB with my Swiss Arms for two years, so I'm used to it. I really do think that shooting service rifle and service CQB has made me a better hunter, at least from the shot placement and handling perspective.

It is allowed in MB, but is not recommended.

Whitetail Deer tend to be on the smaller side and are almost always taken at less than 100 yards.

My minimum is .270/110gr plus. I have never had to chase one (DRT). If hey run and drop, the meat is all pumped full of blood and does not taste the same as a nice humane light switch (7mm-RM 160gr NAB).
