After watching so many go by the exchange over the years, I finally decided to grab one.

Don't know why I waited so long, as I always wanted one since I was a kid. Maybe it's because it isn't really a very practical firearm for my uses, but now I can afford to get one just because I want one.

I've heard they're fun to shoot, so now I'll find out. I don't plan on becoming a collector, but I could see having another one...

Who else likes them?

Had a really nice Underwood, and a wore out Winchester-paratrooper years ago. Both were loads of fun, good thing ammo was cheap and readily available in the 60s and 70s. The folder was the most fun.

That brings back the " good old days " of my youth. Most of us had M1's & surplus ammo was cheap & plentiful.

My favorite carbine was my M2 . 2 banana mags clipped together & I was good to go for a few seconds.

"...accuracy is minute of man..." Not with a good barrel and good ammo. They were made for 300 yard shooting. A decent carbine will do that with no fuss.
"...fun to shoot..." Yep. Pity they're restricted and have been since 1978. Limits where you can go shooting. If you can get an ATT for it.

The first one I see in non-restricted (saw one on the EE ,could kick myself in the a$$ for not jumping on it) I`m all over it.

Really need one for my collection.

Practical? Who cares? You want it, can afford it and so you should have it.

As my favourite gun dealer says "When did need have anything to do with it."

Some are non-restricted ain't they? OR are they restricted by name(like the ar-15)?

They look like they'd be a really fun plinker, with some history thrown in.

Restricted by barrel length. Some have been fitted with longer barrels to make them non-restricted and registered as such.

Are there some little things you can do to "tweak" these into better shooters?

Totally chop the wood off too to make it lighter and better for hunting... maybe drill and tap for a scope?

The M1 Carbine topic comes up regularly. They're restricted due to barrel length. Although I don't condone modifying the milsurp ones, I have some sympathy with those who want to make them non-restricted as long as it is reversible for a day when the government recognizes its ignorance.

"...non-restricted ain't they?..." In about 1979ish, Iver Johnson made some 19" barreled carbines specifically for our market. Not many though. They're not restricted. The carbine is restricted because of the original barrel length. That idiot rule was aimed at the carbine though. At the time, rumour had it that it was due to the bike gangs using chopped stock carbines for their illegal activities.
"...to "tweak" these into better shooters..." Not a lot. Target rifles they ain't. Good ammo helps and you can do a trigger job(polish the sear and hammer only. No metal removal at all though. It's easy to go too far and have uncontrollable FA.) and change the springs. Having 5 thou removed from both sides of the front sight will give you a finer sight picture too.
"...to make it lighter..." How much lighter than 6 pounds would you want? A scope will bugger up the balance and won't make it any more accurate. Scopes only allow you to see the target better.
There's really no point in spending too much time and money on a carbine. You can't hunt with them because ATT's aren't being issued for that purpose. Not many, if any, just to go shoot it either.

One of the only guns I've ever traded off was a really nice IBM carbine with a replacement 19" barrel. Shot 100's of cast bullets with it. Would keep most 5 shot groups around an inch at 50 yd's. Wonder who has it now?

But, if you have a restricted PAL, you can take it to the range though, just like a pistol.

I don't see any reason to rebarrel to make it non restricted, as it's not a hunting piece. It's just something to have fun with at the range, and a significant historical firearm to own.

please guys DO NOT rebarrel any usgi carbines

you ruine them forever as the cfc will NOT ever let you put the origional barrel length back on

If I can't take it outside and shoot it. It's worth absolutely nothing to me.
But I wouldn't want to ruin a piece of history to be able to do that either, although if someone else did that, I'll take their 'ruined' piece of history off their hands :)

"...a restricted PAL...can take it to the range..." The RPAL doesn't let you go anywhere with anything. It's an ownership permit only.
You need an ATT with restricted rifles on it to take a carbine to a range. Said range needs to be rated for restricted rifles too. Not all ranges are.
