So why did the Beretta 90-two tank it as a model?

So I picked up a 90-two at the beginning of the year. The reason I chose a 90-two was because at that time I had a hard on for a Beretta in 9mm. The reason I chose a 90-two and not a 92 is because I was worried about grip size. I also liked the fact the 90-two is lighter then a 92 and it also has a pic rail and internal recoil buffer. As it turns out the 90-two with slim grips is a perfect size for my hand.

Looking at the evolution of the 92 series, the 90-two was supposed to be the upgraded 92 with a rail. However it never caught on and is now discontinued. I pretty much got the last new one in Canada.

The 90-two has now been replaced by the 92A1 which is a inferior product in my opinion. So the question Is, how did Beretta go wrong with the 90-two? Is it as something as simple of aesthetics? I got nothing but praise for it as a pistol.

Well, 92A1 is more popular than 90-two ever was. Reasons are fairly simple.
Market demand would be the most important one.
That means only one thing - people wanted classic Beretta...with the rail...well, at least most of them anyway.
They didn't want the slippery plastic panels that couldn't be replaced with anything aftermarket and were hard to find on top of everything else.
Other reason is that 90-two parts are priced...well - just check out Brownells. Standard 92 barrel vs 90-two. No comment.
Market is not wrong. You just can't agree with the majority of the clients out there. I'm glad that You were able to find what suits You the best.

TBH, I think the majority of people preferred the look and feel of the 92 compared to the 90-two. IMO, the 90-two looked kinda weird because what Beretta did with the frame. Lots of people enjoy the fact that the 92 is an all steel gun, good aesthetics (if you have bigger hands), and over all nice appearance. I think what took the 90-two's place was really the Px4 Storm more than the 92A1. The storm is a wonderful gun and made up perfectly for the 92's large grip and heavy weight. Thats why I got a Px4 :) I wish they would have called it something different, its name is confusing when you talk about it! Who can tell when you say 92 vs 90-two lol :) As long as you enjoy your "90-two", were happy for you!

i picked up a 90-two and a 92a1 at the store and looked them over for a while. i chose the 92a1 and can not understand how you consider it an inferior product? the 92a1 has served me well

Perhaps a lot of people were put off by the stupid name.

"Hello, I'd like to buy a 90-Two, please."

"Certainly, sir. Here you go."

"Uh, no, that's a 92, I want a 90-two."

"Sorry, I thought you said a 92."

"I did say a 90-two."

"Well, that's what I thought you said. This is a 92."

"No, that's a 92, I want a Ninety-2. I mean, a 90-two."

"You know, it might actually serve you better to wait a year, they are bringing out a new version called the 92A1"

:agree: it's a stupid name alright.

Haha! Exactly what I was trying to say :) You said it perfectly!!

The old 92 is old enough and popular enough to be a "classic gun" by now.

If someone put some extra plastic on a 1911 or Browning Hi Power would it sell better or worse than the classic version?

I think this is pretty close to the mark as far as a civilian, recreational gun. Most people who buy a Beretta buy it for the looks, IMO. The 90-two is not a "looker".

Also, I think by 2005 or so most agencies were bailing on the platform in general, largely because it wouldn't survive as a .40 which was the direction things were going at the time, so the attempt to reinvigorate agency sales with the 90-two just didn't work. It was meant as an LE gun and most agencies were pretty much done with Beretta by that time.

That's almost as much fun as trying to wade through CZ's nomenclature. Awesome guns though.

There really isn't much extra plastic at all if you sit down and look at one. The grips are and the dust cover is, thats about it. Mine dosnt wear the dust cover so it shows as much metal as any 92. The frame is Aluminum on these guns. That seems to be a huge misconception on the 90-two.

I do agee the name is pretty stupid though.

It's steel? Not alum?

Why did the 90-two tank?

cou:

The 90-two is an abomination. If I'm getting a double stack Beretta 9mm it will be a good ole 92. :p

....lol... :)

Like the recoil buffer, and how easy it looks to strip... *apples and oranges * How do you like it compared to the MP9?

I like it very much compared to my SW MP9. I generally only keep one firearm in any one caliber at a time as a rule of thumb. The exception being .22's and .223 black rifles. However in this case I plan on keeping both my 9mm pistols. They are both super accurate. Far more so then I am capable of shooting them. Both easy to strip and clean. Both extremely reliable. I figure keeping one metal framed and one plastic framed 9mm isn't a bad thing.

The only real downside to the 90-two is finding a paddle style left handed holster for it. Accessories are hard to come by for south paws for the 90-two.

90-two is a minor upgrade to 92fs feature and functionality wise but still very dated compare to other polymer service pistols like M&P/Glock, etc.

They dropped the ball big time when they discontinued Elite series of 92 pistols.

A 90-two was my first handgun, not by choice though. I really wanted a M&P but at that time they were new and nobody seemed to have them, I settled on getting a 90-two from shooting edge, I liked it and it was a good deal. However it's not with me anymore, after awhile just didnt do it for me, I have smallish hands and the smaller grips helped a lot, but I just didnt connect with it, if that makes sense. Ended up selling to a fellow CGN member, who also sold it after awhile I believe. Was also a pain in the azz explaining to everyone it's a 90-two not a 92.

That being said I would still like a 92 inox some day, hopefully soon. I find the 92 much better to look at then the 90-two.
