So without using a bore snake, cleaning a revolver I really need to...

jam that bronze brush down the muzzle? I know bronze is much softer metal but it still sounds very OUCH from all the reading I gathered about barrel cleaning not going from bore to muzzle one way. So using bore snake is really a better approach for cleaning revolver?

You could put the rod in from the muzzle then attach the bore brush and pull it through.

I just use a bore snake, way faster and less hassle. I have one for every handgun, rifle and shotgun caliber I shoot.

If you want to get anal about it, then yes the brush is not the best way to go. Having said that, do you need a Ferrari to go to the store to get a loaf of bread? If you take it easy and be careful the brush will not do any significant damage or be less effective. Like I said - take your time (if you are in a rush then you shouldn't be cleaning your guns) and don't change direction in the middle of the barrel. Go all the way through and then reverse direction.

Used a rod and bore brush for over 40 years, and never had any problems or wear, revolver or semi-auto, just as knowledgeable shooters had done for decades before me.

I really don't understand this phobia today by new shooters about using bore brushes.

It's silly.

It isn't that a bore brush will not do any "significant" damage. It won't do ANY damage.

For revolvers, just guide the rod with your fingers and don't rub the bore with the rod.

After cleaning and cleaning and cleaning corrosive ammo milsurp guns for years I finally realized the key.... Let the solvent sit for at least 15 min every time. This has cut my brushing stokes down to 1 or 2 per cleaning from 10-15 before. The solvent really works much better on copper, lead, and carbon if you just let it sit.

I didn't figure this out until I bought a shiney revolver and realized how difficult it was to clean it. Once I let the Hoppes 9 sit on it for 15-30 min all the fouling came off like magic. I must have 10 different cleaners I've purchased over the years and now with this process they all work great. I feel stupid.

I'd second those who have said not to be too concerned about using a brush from the muzzle. One good idea is to put a rolled shop cloth over the firing pin area so you don't wack it with the end of the rod when it pops out of the barrel. OTOH a bore snake is quick and easy. I often just use the rod and brush for cleaning out the charge holes.

Guess I'm in the non-OCD category here. I use stainless steel "Tornado" brushes on the factory aluminium rod and run 1 pass from the muzzle in and out. Let the solvent sit while I brush and wipe the frame, then wet patch, dry patch, oil patch and done.

I also use a steel brush, not the tornado type but conventional, am i deranged?
