so.... would you give it all up to move to the yukon?

sounds like your place and life is quite fine where you are. Can you keep your place and just go to the Yukon for a few month to see exactly what it like, before you sell out and move permanently. Maybe rent a place up there, maybe rent your existing place out while you and the Misses are gone. ?

I love it here where I am at actually. However, the way this province is going, I wanna get out while I can.
the next best place to here would be Alaska and I've been trying for 2 years to move there permanently and set up my rifle stock making business.
my wife is a landed immigrant from Bosnia so no citizenship in Canada yet (she's lazy and i give her a hard time about it LOL)
we also have folks willing to sponsor us to move to Texas, where my wife and I have both been offered excellent employment...... but while texas has a certain appeal..... I like water..... and snow.... and call me weird but I smile when I see -20C cause it means I can go drill a hole in a lake somewhere

anyhow, moving here 5 years ago we rented for a year then got into a rent to own that turned into a complete disaster...... fortunately got to walk away from that and were only out 8 grand at the end of the day. So then we found another property we liked and decided to rent it for a year and see if we want to purchase as the landowner has an assumable mortgage.
BUT this winter the house showed us some if it's issues and the building inspector I hired quoted me 35,000.00 ........ so I'm in a position to pull the plug and get outta dodge once again LOL
reality is, and something I struggle with is here, I can purchase a nice place, with nearly no neighbors, 50 or so KM from town (small town 100 mile house) for 150,000 to 300,000
BUT , unless I get a LEH draw , I gotta drive 5 hours north to get my moose each year. the mule deer season here recently changed to a rut closure during the best part of the hunting season (thanx guide outfitters association of BC ..... thanx a whole #### pile)

I want a semi self sufficient , hunter gatherer adventurer lifestyle and I think that is truly vanishing in most parts of BC , by regulation or by other means.
I think I'll find that in the Yukon as a compromise to not getting my way with moving to Alaska. LOL

we'll see, lot's of good replies in this thread, thanx a bunch folks.
will do a road trip this summer and give ya'all a heads up when we head that way ;)

My wife and I have talked about it, but winters here are becoming trying as we get older, so don't see a great advantage by moving to the Yukon other than scenery, hunting, boating, exploring, and so on. Another option we're considering is purchasing property in west Texas, where we could hide from the worst that subarctic winters have to offer, and get back in time for the last 5 or 6 blizzards, just before the geese return. The idea of being able to spend time hiking and shooting comfortably from December till the end of March when Churchillians are hunkered down in -55 is beginning to have some appeal.

The Yukon is awesome but..... stay healthy because the nearest cancer clinic and specialists are down in Vancouver.
If treatments like radiation or chemotherapy are required be prepared to billet in Vancouver.

ya, I got a older brother who's firmly rooted in Vancouver for now so sure I'd have a landing pad down there if I ever need it
but part of my plan is when life takes me to that place where only a hospital can keep me going..... my wife is a care aide and , well a long hike into the mountains will do just fine thanx. I seen people in those homes, palative care and all, no thanx ;)

I'm trying to figure out what people down south think they would have to 'give up' if they want to move north? McDonalds? Traffic? Pollution? Hippies?

I'm struggling with all the things that I'm going to have to give up when I move back down south! I don't know if I could re-adjust to NOT driving my skidoo through town.

Housing isn't that bad in WH. 400k gets you into a nice place and a small piece of property.

where I live, there's no traffic ... well, a 5 car line up at timmies would qualify as traffic around here..... thank god the closest mcdonalds is well over an hours drive.... 100 mile house is one of the most pollution free areas I know of in BC..... but we do have the odd hippie , or something closely resembling hahahaha

so my wife's friend and coworker left a year ago for a position in Whitehorse and the two have kept in contact since.
5 years ago I easily convinced my wife to leave the lowermainland of BC behind and we headed to the caribou, landing just north of canim lake BC.
we like it here, 50km from anything resembling a town, the fishing is excellent.... lake fishing is simply some of the best anywhere..... hunting is okay, I fill my freezer every year.

but the other day my wife asked what I thought of the idea of taking a road trip early this summer to go check out Whitehorse.
My business is mostly from home and can move with me.
My head has been spinning a little.... I'm a bit of a hobby gold prospector, and needless to say the lure of the hunting, fishing and quadding the Yukon has to offer has me somewhat excited. But I wonder what kind of stuff I'm gonna need, will my jeep YJ survive up there LOL , ect

so, if given the chance, would you give up the opportunities as a hunter in BC for a permanent move to the Yukon?
my wife spent several years in Yellowknife in her 20's so know's what life in the north is about.
am I crazy or is this a hell of an opportunity?
what do you guys think?
and you guys from up there, ya never know, we might have to have a cgn get together when I pass thru ;)

Id love to if i could find a slot to fit in and work enuff to pay my way to hunt in the yukon for 12 months or more.

okay, so last question for you yukoners .... when is the best time to drive to Whitehorse as far as road conditions ect?
we're coming from BC interior and want to make a 2week road trip there and back to poke around.

be about 2000km each way

Right now, May and early June is some of the nicest times in the Yukon, before the monsoons hit toward the end of June...........not every year but at least 1/2 the time. I'm in Whitehorse right now and it has been 20 + everyday with clear skies and a light breeze and it's supposed to stay this way for the next few weeks. Unfortunately leaving tomorrow for the 3000 km trip back to my other home in southern BC.

I've been watching the weather in Whitehorse and comparing to my local area (canim lake bc at 3200ft elevation)..... for the past month and a bit the daily highs and lows are almost identical.

now, as for my plan to head up that way for a road trip in june to check things out..... I got a call on Saturday and I'm on standby for a major project building some machinery I helped design and it looks like our bid is going thru :dancingbanana: It may delay my trip to the north but it will sure go along way towards making a move happen ;)

My wife and I lived on Canim Lake in 1971. The Lattas, the Hank Plotz family, and Everett Greenlee and his wife were our neighbours. Picked up our mail at the Eagle creek PO.

I think you will find the weather not much different up here, however the fishing is not quite as good.

I've been to every province and territory excepting Nunavut, and the Yukon was the one place where I thought I could move and be happy. I would miss being so close to the ocean, but the hunting opportunities there are amazing.

the ocean is not that far when you are in Whitehorse ... look up Skagway on a map.

I would move in a second if the opportunity arose. Heck, I'd probably move if I was making half as much as I am now. One of my dream retirement destinations for sure.
