Run steel shot through a full choke do you? I have seen this posted so many times "I run steel through my full choke and never an issue yet". Well here is an issue. This is a full constriction Rem Choke from a Remington 1100. According to my buddy whose store/shop this came into for repair, was a 1 1/4 oz load of # 2 steel. Make sure boys and girls it is stamped Full Steel or Steel Full not just Full!! By the way the repair was a brand new barrel, the barrel was a write off. Unfortunately the part of the choke with the markings was completely gone!

So what's happening here? The steel shot is in the shot cup as it enters the choke. It shouldn't occupy any more space than lead shot. The wad must pass through the full choke and the shot cup is no larger in diameter than the wad. I understand that steel doesn't compress as much as lead shot but I would think there is no compressing happening as the shot travels down the barrel. Is there really such a small tolerance for expansion as the shot goes through the choke or is something else happening?

The amount of constriction is too tight to accommodate the reduced amountvof compression.,

#2 steel in a modern firearm (1100) with a screw in Rem Choke of modern manufacture should not cause that kind of damage. I have no proof but I suspect something else partially or wholly contributed to that burst (it is a burst not a ring bulge or seized expanded choke tube). Remington states that steel shot no larger than #2 is OK in their fixed Full choked barrels. I would think the double layer of choke and barrel would withstand even more compression pressure. Again I have no proof. Interesting.

I met a lovely lady from Montreal while on vacation in Cuba a while back....we went out to a disco together one night and had a little too much to drink. Well one thing led to another and she decided to stay at my place that evening. Pulled out the trusted Trojan, modified for her pleasure, and got down to business. Apparently the constriction on the beautiful Quebecer was a little to full and my modified Trojan couldnt withstand the pressures and came apart much like that remchoke. From there on out, I decided it would be best to use a modfied Kicks High Flyer when hunting waterfowl with steel shot. Unfortunately this is a true story!

You should have used Rem Oil to help ease the strain on that constriction. Nothing works like a little Rem Oil teflon coating! ;)

Dad, is that you?

Maybe your Montreal lady was more of a double barrel kind of girl, and the constriction was cause by going down the wrong barrel on accident?

A distinct possibility! I was quite a few drinks past my limit so who knows what I was seeing

Haha..lesson learned!

But on a serious note, thats pretty devastating damage. I wouldnt have expected a modern choked barrel to come apart like that. Very interesting!

I've been using an 870 with Remchokes since the mid 90's (started when I was like 10). Anyway, long story short, I've always used a full choke in that shotgun. The thing is, the choke is marked "for steel and lead use". And haven't blown my cawk off yet. Is it safe? Or should I buy a kevlar codpiece?
