So you've killed a bear, wolf or coyote ...now what?

I have said this before, bears on a salmon river eating a barely twitching carcass all the way down to a floating puss bag.... baby disposable diapers at the dump, just makes me want to go out and shoot/eat one>>>>>>>NOT. I will eat one, just about when they run out of cloven hooved animals. I have a deal with them, most of them dont know this.....stay out of the apple and pear tree.....or get a ride in a Ford.

Bears eat whatever they can find, they're not picky.

Absolutely! However, you can choose where to hunt them and the time of year (within the regulations). You can hunt near a dump or on river with tons of dead, spawning salmon or you can shoot them in a berry field far from those types of areas. Of course, there are no guarantees in life and bears can travel far, but it's reasonable to hunt near an easy food source like berries.

I'd rather eat a moose than a bear any day.

Just curious what happens to a succesfully hunted predator ? Obviously Keep the pelt and utilize it somehow ( rug, hat, etc) what about the meat ? The bones and entrails ? Where does all that stuff go?

Thanks

why would you shoot a bear if you didn't plan on eating it?? Coyotee's and Bears are two different things when it comes to your obligations after it's shot..

My wife and kids far prefer bear to deer meat. Where I hunt is far from houses or any dump and I only bait with apples, carrots, fry oil.

A neighbor was baiting with fish and dead chickens, I checked his camera for him and added some bait and damn near gagged. No way I could gut an animal within 100 yds of the stink barrel and I would think of that smell with every bite.

Lol, I bow fish carp in the summer and my buddy wanted my haul for bear bait..... I told him he was crazy...

Sure enough, he got his bear..... And a big surprise at the dinner table....

I've heard ( not seen...heard) that Bear meat is pretty parasite infested, not unlike pigs in days of old. I'm going to have to pass on that thanks. I prefer my wild meat Med rare, not a well done fan.

Have never had that issue..... But they can get trichinosis....

All of my bears get turned into sausage and crock pot roasts.....

For the hide is one reason. Maybe one is being a nuisance at your camp is another? Or maybe just because you can and want to? Those are my thoughts on why. I don't specifically hunt them but once every few years I have purchased a tag just in case I come across a nice one in my travels to make a rug with.

Not to persecute you spank, but just wanted to point out that harvesting a bear and not using the meat is illegal in Ontario..... Which is where the OP is.....

I feed bears corn oats and molasses for about a month before hunting. Usually about a ton of bait by time comes to hunt....Bears taste good around here.

Molasses is key.... Or something sugary..... I also use bacon and other pork fat..... I like my bears self basting lol.... But this is in a place where the meat stuff has no time to spoil.....

I get that and never said anything contrary. The OP asked why kill one if you had no intention of eating one? I just gave a few reasons why. If you have to harvest the meat so be it but there is nothing to stop a person giving it away or even feeding it to their dogs as long as it's legally harvested. Now here in SK you only have to harvest the hide by law. The carcass can be left.

When it comes to a bear's diet - has anyone checked what they fed pigs in the good ol' days? Farmers used to go to stores and restaurants and get stuff they were throwing out. Another biggie was whey from cheesemaking, but if you ever smelled whey that's been sitting around for a while- not good. Not so sure that what they get today is much better.

And if you've ever eaten bear that tasted or smelled strong, my guess is it had heated up before being gutted and skinned. Those 2 are crucial, within minutes of the bear getting shot. I have never had a bear I shot that tasted or smelled like anything but a meat carcass, but I was given a bear that had been shot at sunset and found in the morning. The smell would knock you over. I've had moose and deer meat given to me that were found hours later, and they were fine.

thanks for the posts - I didn't realize a bear will taste as good as what you bait it with , makes
Sense tho !

Not exactly how it goes, unless you put him in a cage and feed him. They don't just eat the bait you left for them all day, many just spend a few minutes there.

I've gutted quite a few bears where the abdominal cavity is full of roundworms. Pretty disgusting and turns you off eating the meat. That said, most wild game has parasites, but none are really harmful so long as you cook it well. For this reason, I prefer eating all wild game well done, especially if it hasn't been previously frozen.

There is a strange history to human consumption of bear meat.
In the meat hunting for survival days of the great depression when people virtually lived on wild meat, it was very rare to see any family eating bear meat.
They all liked the fat from a bear for cooking, especially for pastry, as well as bear fat for conditioning leather boots. But the meat wouldn't even be brought home.
This was basically the same for the native Indians of the day.
Old habits die hard and to this day I won't eat bear meat. I have certainly shot bears. I even had a nice spring shot brown made into a half head rug by a professional taxidermist.
Since abut 1980 in BC, meat from game animals, including bear, had to be brought home to the place of residence. Then, the law ends right there! It does not say you have to eat the meat.

The fat is one of the best for what you say, it also has a really low melting point. It'll turn liquid if left in the sun. It makes the best pie crust and has no equal I've found for treating leather. it also doesn't seem to turn rancid, I have a coffee can half full I use for leather and it has no nasty smell, it's probably 10 years old.
The old natives around here used to use it for arthritis and even for hair conditioner, I used to freeze a bunch for an older gentleman. But you're right, nobody around here eats the meat. In fact, people are usually offended if you offer it.

I go to a feed mill, and they use a concentrated liquid caramel, the concentrate is very expensive, I think 2kg was $57. but if you put about 2 cups into 50 gallons of fryer oil, it will make it smell so sweet it will almost give you a headache. The bear harvested by the young lad I took out this fall was eating icing sugar when he shot him
