Society of Misguided Adventurers

I don't think it is close- minded, merely factual. We all know what the big 5 is-Ardent is so kind as to have it listed in his signature line so we don't forget.
As there is no official "big 5" record, scorekeeper, high commision or whatever- it is only for people like us who are interested and spend significant amounts of time, money and energy to pursue such things as a discussion subject.

As an example most likely no-one will ever sport hunt legally a Tiger or Jaguar again- Should we rename a caracal as a tiger and say it is the same thing? Would it not greatly cheapen the achievements of the last living men who did hunt Tigers and Jaguars? They are the same men who successfully hunted the "big 5", I know a couple of those men and I suspect you do too. (big 5- can't say as I ever met anyone with a tiger or jaguar, but I know they are out there)

Realizing we are veering off on a tangent from the misguided society (but this is what it was created for?) I would say that if someone I was discussing current world events with mentioned in passing that he had successfully hunted the "big 5" and I then asked how's and where's about the Rhino? And he said "oh no- I substituted a hippo for the Rhino" I would come away from the discussion thinking he had misrepresented his achievements- Wouldn't you?

No doubt there can be a "new 5" and "old 5" as stated there is no officially sanctioned "keeper of the big 5" except you and I in our heads.

If someone told me they had a Dino and showed me a mustang GT and when questioned said it "was just as fast, easier to afford and easier to find so he called it a Ferrari" I would also feel he was misrepresenting.

Many people say that hippo's have always killed more people (natives) than all of the big 5 put together- even 50 or 100yrs ago. That's not a new thing in the last 30 years since the rhino has been decimated.

I would add snake to your list of "dangerous animals without molesting " all the natives I have been around were somewhat nonchalant around elephants and hippos, cautious around lions, pretty damn cautious around water they knew had crocs, and absolutely sh%t ass terrified of snakes-any snake sighting and it was just the fat white guy left standing there alone- trackers and scouts were gone so fast all that was left was dust in the air.

BUT tangent notwithstanding as an interesting subject- Ardent is of course correct- I love to hear stories of polar bear hunts, Mongolian/Kamchatka sheep any unusual adventure besides whitetails and turkeys...
A self guided forest elephant is the coolest- They are super neat looking with that dark Ivory, Are you organizing it with Cam? To me that is very near or the pinnacle of misguided adventuring available to us in this day and age.

Fair points all around, and agree overall. You know Cam personally? This is a small world, I'm doing some work for him in exchange for his know how on getting everything in place. He is quite the fellow, and a nicer guy in this line of adventuring is hard to come by. I agree on it being a proper adventure, I was actually expressly after White Rhino, to get it done before any Rhino is no longer a possibility. I was quite sad however for the experience I knew I was in for, so I worked with Cam and we found something I can do for him to get me in Cameroon just prior to Rhino. Rhino will be the cool down and rest period after a few weeks in the jungle. I'm hoping this is my best trip to date.

I'll produce a spreadsheet soon on proposed points rankings for "achievements", will be fun to debate at least. Most of us are fairly isolated in our pursuits without much of a group who understands our exploits and interests. A group of like minded peers is something I look forward to and would enjoy, hopefully we can get a sort of online gazette going for thoughts and experience sharing among the group. Vast forums exist sharing bits and pieces of the interests however it is all diluted by the contributor's geography and a variety of unrelated interests. Open groups also invite largely non-applicable chatter, will brain storm some ideas on how we can correspond and share.

Notlim2424 and Angus,

the guy you are talking in Cameroon is the guy for sure.

chasse libre is not for everybody for sure and certainly not the forest one.

elephant is really the high level on the hunting on the do-it-yourself or mostly as you wont be alone there (and hopefully). if in the same token and the license permit it you may be able to get a bongo or a dwarf buffalo who knows but just a elephant would be great as an adventure ...

I ain't never going to get me beyond an elipse...........I am pretty much unilingual, with a touch of Spanish and a smattering of conversational French.............I'm screwed...........

I do not have an appropriate combination - pilot's license, no longer valid due to injuries sustained in accident (commercial, single IFR, floats and glider), 2 languages (but get kind of get along in 4), 4 countries, +30 big game kills, two continents but none of the dozen.

How about successes in different areas, such as noodling for Tigerfish in the Zambezi?

I didn't read through the whole thread - is there going to be a mascot? A logo or coat of arms? What about an official drink (I suggest it not be a peach cooler or mint julep)? Will smoking of pipes be permitted?

I wonder if a point system might not work better? That way the potential members' accomplishments, and experiences stand on their own and not so much by how they fit into an arbitrary grouping.

Is 30 countries worth more than 500 or 1000 kills? Both are notable is their own way.

Hey Ardent.........if this is going to be that difficult, you forgot Markhor.........and I don't see no Bongo on that list either..........but 4 languages, I don't see multiple languages as a mark of a successful big game hunter............I'm a math whiz but certainly not a linguist.....

So, throw me some points concepts, the greater the adventure required the higher the score in my opinion. I do like the idea you can have a running number achievement wise.

Well.... You have a pretty elite committee of to officers there... Perhaps Hunting stories should be submitted to the committee and each of the committee members could award points based on the merits of the hunt...

I guess I qualify for everything else and if there is North American Big Five. Never hunted Africa but I've sure killed moose and grizzly, and they shoukd count as our BIG FIVE. :)

And if anyone recalls our BC coastal bigass grizzly hunt of a few years ago, it's pretty clear that it was more dangerous than most African Big 5 Hunts! :)

Douglas,

I don't even think 250k$ will bring you one rhino for now ... don't make too much publicity before ..

all the best.

Phil

Actually I believe that had it not been for the negative publicity Corey's rhino permit would have gone for a schwack more money. In an amusingly sad twist of fate, the anti-hunters' attempt to protect rhinos ended up costing rhino conservation about a quarter of a million dollars. Well done "animal lovers". Who really cares about animals?
