Still had one untouched M-14 Socom 18 DA... I started a challenge of building with all new stuff a M-14 that would be the closest to MOA possible and without spending more than a 1000.00 for it....
I started with...
One unfired DA Socom 18...
One casm scope base ( brand new)...
One Match Casm fluted oprod guide ( brand new )...
One 3200 Elite 10X40 Mildot scope (brand new)...
Leupold low one inch rings ( brand new)....
One Voodoo tactical cheekrest ( brand new )...

Total cost so far 980.00... The rifle will be mounted than, bring to the range, zero and then, i will try to bring this rifle the closest possible to MOA with Match factory ammo...This is gonna fun...
Along the way i will post pictures of the rifle and a range review with the result, getting a 1.5 MOA M-14 rifle with an under 1000.00 investment total would be quite satisfactory... Stay tuned... JP.

Looks good, have you done any work to it yet besides the parts above? One of the things I wish I'd done before working on mine was a set of "before" groups to compare with.

Yep, establishing a bone stock, out of the box iron sight baseline with different ammunition would be advantageous.

Indexation was right on, gaz system was sqare, op rod guide is the most single change you can do to a fast accuracy improvement, i would be scare to shoot one of those with the flymsy oprod guide original, a good base and scope will help accuracy, and no copperwash ammo just Federal 168 GMM, just trying to get the best MOA possible for less than 1000.00 and anyone could do it, i am no Smith, just an enthousiasm shooter... JP.

looks very nice !
I bet if you reloaded your own .. it would also help to dial in on moa and find the sweet spot for this rifle

i should have bought one of these socoms when they came out... man, they are cool

Not really.
It may help you shoot the rifle more accurately, but the rifles accuracy is unaffected by adding a mount and scope.

The original open sights are so thick, no way you can make decent groups with those, for me if i can get accuracy, i need an optic, as a matter of fact many will thighten their group with an optic, let say that option is a plus for the human factor...
We alway shoot those chinese rifles with cheap ammo, i will feed it Match factory ammo, it ought to be better with it, i will bring it to the range this week... JP.

match is good ammo ! But, each rifle usually has a particular load/primer/bullet combo which will make it sing ..... match bullets are made to much better tolerance than ordinary factory bullets, but they are not tailored to this specific rifle.

and i agree that the iron sights are coarse on the rifle !!

even some minor trigger work and you can improve accuracy ..... theres alot of potential with these rifles and I'm a firm believer that they are a bargain for what they are sold

The trigger on this one is not bad, no creep and a clean break, heavy but nothing you could not control with a few dozens shots... JP.

Caramel, for this project, I highly recommend you reload for this project. 1) you will get the most accuracy, 2) after supplies, reloaded 308 is almost 1/3 the cost of factory match. This is very important to know for the budget shooter.

If you do, use IMR4895, IMR4064, or H4895. Those three powders are recommended in Zedikers M14 realoding guide.

Hi JP, good to see you back.

Sounds like an interesting summer.
Are you going to establish a base line with one specific load and fine tune the gun with that load ?
That would give you an indication of which tweaks do what.
Once there is no further improvement in groups roll your own and watch the groups shrink again :)

I stuck with H4895 for a couple of years, but have had some really good results with Varget.

Tight groups, and keep the gas turned off........it really helps.

Got 6 or 7 kinds of factory Match ammo to see the weight of bullet that get the nod, then i will see from there, after one good range session, it will be easier to evaluate the potential of this particular rifle... JP.

True. I've always replaced them with a better front sight post.

Tune the trigger if it sucks, shim the gas system and try a few different off the shelf loads.

Good luck.

I am very curious to see if you can get 1in groups out of your Norc. Tagged for interest.

I think the best I’ve managed is a 5in group at 200m with the Norc ammo, around a 3in group with some other substandard stuff, at 200m, but then again, I’m a craptacular shot and fairly new to the precision game. I’m also a little lazy and not very smart so loading my own ammo, calculating for different grains and bullet drops and all that other stuff is beyond me. I never thought to try quality match ammo, so maybe that’s a painless (albeit more expensive in the long run) answer for me.

2.5 MOA at 200 yards with cheap surplus Norc copper wash is not what I would call CRAPTACULAR. I would in fact say not too shabby, IMHO..... And if that was with open sights pretty damn good. Anyone else think not?
