Soft face hammer, with brass tip

Where in Canada can you purchase a soft faced hammer, the one with a nylon tip on one side, and a brass tip on the other. Believe it or not, even Acklands Grainger can not get these anymore...

If I can not get one of these, I will have to find some brass hammers smaller that sledgehammers for smith and reloading work... most are WAY overpriced though anymore. I also see a lot have switched to Copper instead of brass.

If I could find the Lyman DELUXE HAMMER & PUNCH SET here in Canada I would be set!

You really need to be careful with brass or copper hammer heads. They run from very soft to very hard. Mixed with certain alloys, they can be harder than the steel in you firearms.

For small punches, I like to use a 1/2 to 1 ounce cast steel hammer with one flat side and one wedge shaped side, with a flat on the point of the wedge, with hopefully a wooden handle. With a good quality steel hammer, I find you don't have a problem with the hammer slipping off the punch and fretting the end.

If you need to drift a sight, use a steel hammer and a piece of brass rod, rather than a punch, which will cause indents in the piece being moved or gouges when it slips off.

Google "foundry in Canada" most will offer some sort of solid hammers in brass, copper or aluminum. Try to stay away from those cheap PA Chinese hammers. They are usually glass hard and brittle.

Good info bearhunter, thank you for the tip! I have aquired some brass in different diameters from an industrial source ranging from 1/4" to 2". Most of it is 4 to 10 inches long. Appears to be quite soft though as it is quite easily deformed. I will probably make my own hammers from some of it, and make some drifts from the rest.
