Greetings.
Just picked up my second bolt action 22WMR rifle and while my first one will fire any brand of ammo I feed it (including CCI, Armscor, Winchester, S&B, Federal, Hornady) my new-to-me rifle has major issues with Winchester ammo. Both 40gr FMJ and 30gr ballistic tipped Winchester ammo will often require 2 or 3 strikes before going off. Probably more than half of the boxes I shot. All eventually fired, but as you can imagine unacceptable for hunting and frustrating at the range. All ammo appears to have reasonable firing pin strikes, but 100% of the Federal and Armscor ammo went BANG first try (sample size of about 30 rounds of each type).
I know from my centerfire rifle reloading some primers are "softer" than others. For all of my CF hunting ammo I use Federal primers as, whether it is true or not, I never had primer not go bang with them (I have had primer issues in the past with CCI LR primers).
I have cleaned the bolt on my new-to-me 22WMR but haven't figured out how to tear apart the bolt to give it a good deep clean (if anyone knows how to rip apart a Savage/Stevens Model 305 bolt, please let me know!)
Anyone else noticed "harder" or "softer" brass or easier-to-ignite primers in 22WMR? It's not a huge issue as I have ammo choices, but I bought a few boxes of 30gr Winchester ballistic tip as it shoots well in my Marlin and eventually would like to standardize on ammo (vs having to adjust my scope with different ammo). As an aside, my Marlin is not that accurate (at 100 yards) with the Federal but does like the Hornady and Winchester 30gr ballistic tip.
Thanks
