Solve my Savage curiosity.

I can't say for sure...... It's an Internet pic...... But maybe fosty is dismayed by the idea of that rifle being checkered?
The very first rifle I bought and still own, was a lefty Sako Deluxe AV. The stock and bluing are pieces of art and I admit that after some hard use, the various dents, scratches and marks bothered me. She's now relegated to a safe queen but everytime I take her out of the safe and look at those same marks I relive and have fond memories of the hunting trips and incidents that caused them.
I dont get why everyone seems to think for another $100 you can get a Vanguard. There was the one sale that wholesale had recently, but otherwise Vanguards are like $600+. My buddy just bought a stainless Axis w/camo stock for $199 at Reliables big sale. Thats a loooooooooooooooooooooong ways off the price of a Vanguard. Everyone is trying to compare a regular price Axis to a discounted Vanguard, how is that equitable?
A cheap axis is just that. CHEAP. If it wasn't for the Axis, I would be stuck with hunting with milsurps. While I love my Lee Enfield, Its a ##### to get a scope on it, and lugging around a 6 foot long Mosin Nagant isn't exactly on the top of my to-do list either.

If you own an accurate and functioning 322 you have a go to rifle. It has bounced around for 50 years and continues to perform.

Why the Axis.
I would say the same reason that one of my first rifles was a "brand new" $90 H&R single shot 30.06 that kicked like a mule...
Because when I was in my 20's, married, had one kid and one on the way there was no way that I could drop (then) 400 bucks on a "decent" rifle, so if I wanted something other then my "hand me down" 30.30, 130 bucks was all I could afford (which included the 39 dollar 3-9x40 Bushnell Sportview scope) and I was "hooked up for moose".
Now that the kids are gone, the house is paid off, no car payment I can afford the Deluxe Vanguard with a FFP Burris scope and that 2K combo doesn't hurt (financially) half as hard as that 130 dollar single shot did.

I love rifles, period! I love even more rifles that have highly figured wood, deep dark bluing, and are one-off pieces.
But I am not a bit afraid to take these hunting. A mark or two simply shows it is a working, rather than a show piece.
Savages? OK I guess, but not a first choice IMHO. So many superior choices for a few dollars more.
I do own one Savage, but it is not all Savage. I was given a Model 11 that had the 22-250 barrel shot out.
I had a take-off 40X barrel in a 22 centerfire chambering, so I had Dennis make me a 225 Winchester out of it, and fit it to the Savage action.
It's in a heavier varmint synthetic stock, and really is a good shooter, so I am disinclined to get rid of it, particularly since I have a
real stock of 225 Winchester ammo and components in my possession.
I had an M14 in 243 pass through my hands a while back.....shot well, but not attractive enough for me to keep.
For those that like them...more power to them. As for me, just not my bag of beans. Dave.

if you get your settings right, you would still be on page one... lol
Bought a Savage Hog Hunter Model 110/11 in .223.
Took it to the range and was stacking 75 grain Hornadys, yes it was at a indoor range but hey the other guy was shooting way worse.
Looked thru my scope and this guy with an real expensive looking beautiful rifle was doing apple size groups.
I left my retrieved targets out on the bench, guess I liked showing off what a sub 500.00 rifle can do off shooting bags.
Thought the AXIS was much lighter and preferred the heavier barrel on mine.
Took it to the range and was stacking 75 grain Hornadys, yes it was at a indoor range but hey the other guy was shooting way worse.

I wasn't only focusing on the Axis. That was only part of the intended question. Anyone have any experience building on one of their more upscale actions like the 110?
I have a Savage 111. Its a decent rifle. I only bought it because I got a good deal on it. Its a very accurate rifle. I would highly suggest spending a few bucks more for the 111 over the axis. I'm not a fan of the axis at all but I do understand people don't have as much money to spend on rifles than others.

And this is from a shilen select match on a M16 action, 7 Rem Mag. Just shot it this morning. I actually have this rifle for sale in the EE...guess no one wants a hunting rifle that shoots in the 2s for under a grand. Guess I'll keep it lol!
