Tried all the tools I have, still couldn't get rid of the flash suppressor's round nut set screw. Here's the pic for my gun and tools. Can you take a look, do I just miss the right screw?

Hello,
Try applying some heat to the screw. Looks like some kind of threadlocker is applied to the area(brownish looking in your pic).

The heat should break down any substance keeping hold of the screw.

Use a long handle allan wrench as well - short end in screw head - just go slow though so you don't strip it or snap the screw.

Cheers, Carl

$29.99 at Canadian Tire

Go to Canadian Tire and buy an "extractor" I have one here, but you are a tad far away in Calgary. It is basically at left-hand tap that goes into the head of the allen key hole, grips, tightens and locks into place and the you just unscrew till it comes out.

Good luck
Robert

Looks like the socket on the setscrew is already stripped so you will probably need to use some type of screw extractor along with some heat to loosen up the thread lock. I have one called Drill-Out which is abit harder to find and more expensive but works great. I got my set from KBC Tools

OK, so I need some special size "extractor" to get it out. Once I take it out, i don't think it's reusable anymore, right? Just ordered a GI suppressor, hopefully they have screw with it.

Now that you have used all your AMERICAN specification tools, get some METRIC ones. Then pick one that is slightly oversize and file it down to fit. The Chinese set screw heads are not a standard metric step.

Ditto on the loctite opinion. Heat with a propane torch to soften the glue, then unscrew.

From Lee Emerson's book (p 312)

Barrel - Chinese barrels have metric dimension barrel shank, gas cylinder lock and suppressor nut threads. However, the Chinese barrel shank thread size is very close to the American made receiver barrel ring thread size. Chinese M14 barrels will usually, but not always, thread into an American made M14 type receiver without any trouble. Nonetheless, barrel installation and headspacing should be performed by a reputable M14 gunsmith. A USGI gas cylinder lock will not fit on a Chinese barrel because of the differing thread sizes. Similarly, the Chinese gas cylinder lock will not fit on a USGI or U. S. commercial manufacture M14 type barrel.
Chinese flash suppressor nut-to-USGI barrel - The Chinese flash suppressor nut will go on without resisting but at a slightly downward angle due to the slight difference in threads.
USGI flash suppressor nut-to-Chinese barrel - The USGI and Chinese flash suppressor nuts are interchangeable on the Chinese barrel.

Hey Leaf boy, before you start being a little over the top with your comment...... you should look closely at the picture that was supplied with this posting you will see that Sunnyside has indeed tried the metric Allen keys as they are on the left side of the picture.

As for the "brown" around the screw.....I imagine it's just more of the chinese gooey greese that didn't make the clean-up.

Sunnyside .....what you have used (metric) should have worked.

The only thing that I can add is that you can try three things.
#1 Make sure that the castle nut is not putting pressure on the screw.
This set screw is very small and I could see that any additional tension might be a bad thing.
#2 Try heating it up a little and try it again.
#3 If one of the keys is a little too loose, try placing a very fine cloth on the key before you insert it....I have found this on very rare occasion has added enough to the screw to let the key to bite......but this is your last chance

As far as I know.....nobody makes an extractor that small.

BTW your tools in question look like they are from a very budget set......try some that are of better quality???

you'll probably have to buy an allen that's close and make a 'CUSTOM" with a file, if the head's not buggered-as far as the extractor goes, if rlg can supply a stock number or size, we're just as civilized- we have canadian tires all over the place- maybe as many as a dozen in town- something wierd, while the threads on my old norc are metric, all the heads are american allens- but it's a first gen norc

I prefer to use a screwdriver style hex wrench as it allows downward pressure and applying torque that isn't off centre like using an L shaped wrench. Different qualities of wrenches fit differently despite the markings and you may find that a higher quality metric or standard hex wrench is a better fit,and possibly even require tapping it to get it in. Cheap L shaped wrenches are often poorly sized and metric and imperial sizings may be incorrect or interchangeable because they produce such poor dimensional quality. If the screw is tight, the wrench needs to be a very tight fit.

Last resort, use the hole in the centre to drill it out, then chase the threads with a tap.

DO NOT CUT THE FLASH HIDER OFF- DRILL OUT THE SCREW IF YOU MUST, BUT THE BARREL CUT IS BEST LEFT TO A GUNSMITH- you'll have to do a re-crown and you're probably not equipped to do that- besides once you get the screw out you'll have to drill/dremel off the welds aft of the flashider- READ THE STICKIES ON HOW TO DO THIS

Yes, of course I will leave it to the gunsmith. don't want to mess it up anymore :)

Oh, yes!!!!:D:D Just follow what GG&FB said and got a better quality screw set ($5.8^_^) from canadian tire. Give it a little bit pressure and easily take the screw out. The size is: 1/16".

Thank you very much!!!:)

Before wasting your time on the nut, you may want to look closely at the flash hider as it may be welded to the barrel anyway, most Norc's are welded in two spots.

EDITED: should have read the last post... but the weld thing still applies.

Yes, that's the next "project" I'm gonna do. So drill the weld out is the only way?

For future reference when I worked as a mechanic I had good luck with removing stripped allens by taking a Torx head that is about the same size and tapping it into the hole. The Torx cuts its own grooves as you tap and gives you a nice tight fit.
