Hey CGN,

Are LAR15 mags legal?? I'm kidding.

I'm looking to purchase a few but I'm having a hard time deciding which dealer to go with. I've tried searching but I can't find any concrete comparison. Basically, I want to know which is the best one to go with, who's had experience with them in 3-gun, ipsc, etc. Basically a CanadaAmmo vs Questar vs SFRC vs any others. (If any are the same manufacturer, I apologize as most sites just list them as an LAR15 magazine) From my searching, it would appear the CA ones are the best, but I just wanted to gather some collective knowledge from those wiser than I.

If this HAS been discussed and I missed it, I'm sorry, but can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

edit: the main reason why I was asking was because I was at an IPSC Rifle match in Nov and one guy's mags kept jamming. I heard another guy say, "that's what you get when you buy those mags". In hindsight, I should've just asked, but hindsight is always 20/20.

It was suggested that the Questar and SFRC functions the same. But that at one point you may have to change the follower and file it down, but not too much, in order to fit 10 rounds on a closed bolt. At the end of the day, I bought 5 from SFRC and will test them out when I my AR comes in.

I've seen some really bad LAR-15 mags in the past. A buddy of mine was using the ones with the grey bubbly follower in his Vz-58 and the bolt hold open was catching and marking up the back of the mag pretty bad.

I bought the ones I like from the Calgary Shooting Center, but thats a bit of a haul for you! ;)

I bought a bunch from Questar last year I think, and they all worked flawlessly. Some other LAR's I have seen people use have been complete crap however. Not sure where they got them from, but from my experience the Questar mags work well.

There is a simple tweak to make the bubbly lar followers work in the VZ, I prefer the non bubbly follower though found in the older lar mags and xcr mags.

Are you comparing .223 only or any of the LAR15 ones? I'm interested in the same answers for the 7.62X39 mags if anyone has any feedback.

Same here. Bought a bunch from Questar as well (light gray ones) and have had no issues with any of them on my Norinco.

Same. Mine have worked fine. My only complaints are about the couplers and not the mags themselves.

I noticed with the gray ones they are hard to use on closed bolt. Very tight. Often in a course of fire it would fall out for not seating all the way in. I run a Norc. 5.56 but dont think thats the problem. I ended up shaving a bit off the follower to ease seating and works better. Just be careful not to shave too much off or ya get an 11 rounder.

I think CanadaAmmo has black ones. Sounds cheesy, but this alone would skew my choice as I think the grey ones are heinous (have two myself). I also put magpul followers in mine and I believe the CA ones have them pre-installed. The grey followers are garbage.

The light grey ones I got originally from Questar are still running fine. And then a little later I ordered more. The second batch showed up as dark grey and one by one broke down for some reason or another.

Also light plastic couplers are crap.Toy plastic.
