Some appreciation for the spotered enfield

I just took my Grandpere's old Mk.III moose gun out to the range. Nice to shoot, though I am wondering just how he nailed his game so easily. This rifle is shooting roughly 3 feet high at 100 yrds for me.

Oh well; I'm wanting to work out light loads with heavy cast lead anyway. If it's shooting high with factory 180s, light loads with 200s might just drop right into the bull's eye.

Dad has had these two for decades. When at his house last week I asked him when he last fired the No.1 MkIII and he couldnt remember. Told him that was a good indication he should give it to me. He agreed.:) Im going to attempt to restore it to its former glory as my first restoration project.

The No.4 however will stay sportered and unscoped. I love that rifle the way it is. Nice looking stock and good handling. Love the ghost ring sight.

I just wish .303 ammo was more reasonably priced......

The 303 british is pretty easy to load yourself. By the time you buy 200 rounds of factory ammo you could buy a complete reloading set up. don't be scared of reloading, as long as you PAY ATTENTION to what you are doing it is easy and safe.

Im not sure. I hope not as that throws a wrench into my plans. Heres a closer pic of the muzzle, although still not very close. I dont any pics closer at the moment. How long should it be?

Oh I know. My father in law is a very accomplished and experienced hand loader who will one day teach me the craft. Just havent got around to it yet. I was going to buy my own setup recently and he told me not to as he has doubles (or more) of pretty much everything I need to get started.

I don't really like the Lee Enfield very much (compared to other guns I want to get), and I don't want to have to feed another rifle in another calibre, but a LE is just something I have to get for the very reason you stated. I'm sure I'll like it more when I shoot it though. :D

303 ammo isn't all that pricy if you go to the right places. Both Budget and Tradex sell it for under $20. I live close to Henry at Budget and just go there to pick it up. I also hand load my 303. I use a cheap Lee handlaoder. Cost $35 on line and it takes about 1/2 hr to load 20 rounds. Cost around 50 cents a round.
Some gun shows will sell it around 20 to 25 a box. I think Tradex has a deal on no shipping for bulk orders.
Keep those sporters alive. An Enfield is an Enfield

NRF No1 MkIII*, this one is my new restoration project. Spending the time to do this one right, going to be a beautiful rifle when I'm done bringing her back to her old self.

Parker-Hale converted No4 Maltby. This one is a fine shooter...round count remains under 100 from brand new.

LE sporters are still a handy, fun, tough rifle. I have ten times more love for them than a chinsy modern hunting rifle. In a survival situation I'd take 10 LEs or M1 Garands before anything else. I really want a nice P14 or M1917 sporter (or original) to go with them one day. I think they make the ###iest looking sporters there are.
 
This rifle has probably made more hunting trips than any other I own. I always take it as a back up, in case I or someone else needs a rifle.

A professionally done #1. Slick and handy. barrel is around 22" with no front sight. Scope is mounted nice and low.

It makes a good loaner because anyone can be shown how to use it in 30 seconds.

Great for all the reasons listed (function, nat'l pride, etc...), and also affordable. There are more than a few "hundred dollar guns" out there, whose value exceeds a new 'iron.

Funny about current ammo costs/availability. When I was a kid, every gas station/corner store had .303, and 30-30 ammo! Although I'm sure there are a few less rifles now, still enough of them that need feeding!

True, they had .303 British ammo just about everywhere. I used to have an old box of Dominion 215 grain loads. It had written on it in pencil $6.95 or 50 cents apiece, country stores would sell you one round at a time. Some of the local old timers were pretty frugal.

My grandfather had a sportered Lee Enfield Carbine 1896(sob) and he used FMJ in it sometimes. He filed an X on the nose of the FMJ bullets with a triangular file. Made a ghastly wound.
