Some Glass for a 270

Hi All,

What I need are quality scope recommendations for a Mossberg 4x4 chambered in 270 Win. This is going to be my up north deer/moose/bear gun. As such, ranges could vary quite a bit. It kicks so I need a scope that can stand the kick and not fall off zero.

I have about $400 to commit to the glass, but will go a little over to get something that will hold zero till the cows come home and don't need to fiddled with on high scope mounts to find zero at 100 yards.

Thanks to all responses!

Your requirements are not demanding. You could buy almost any scope in that price range and end up happy. I have had a bushnell elite 3200 on my 270 for 12 years now. Dropped, banged, hunted in thick bush, banged off of all sorts of things, rolled a quad onto it last year, zero is consistent. It actually has a nice little seam in the objective casing from the quad roll. Didn't lose zero, still tracks as well as it ever did (not that great).

Losing a scope to recoil off of a 270 is, in my own opinion, unlikely unless you are using a Simmons or similar.

A .270 is not at all a beast on scopes, and $400 is a pretty good budget for anyone wanting a hunting scope who isn't a scope snob.

A Leupold VX2 in 3-9X40 would serve you well and leave you with some money, or try and find a Zeiss 3-9x40 on sale.

I've got a Leupold fixed 6x on mine, which can be found used for maybe $250 in great shape, and I like it just fine.

Thanks CGNers

Been reading what I can on scopes I would like to try reaching out to 200 yards just to see what I'm capable of, and if I find success there then ever increases ranges. I have open access to 100 acres of land and I do utilize it :) I certainly wouldn't hunt yet over 200 yards but the point is that I get to know the firearm and glass combination, and be able to hit my target consistently at those ranges before I hunt at those ranges. Most of what I read says spend again on the scope what you spend on the gun, but, who knows, it could be retailers writing those. I like to hear from real people who do the same the things I'd like to be doing.

I hunt that area.
And chose a 1" tube with a 56mm bell.
It offers good light transmission and field of view.
I'm particularly happy I did at sunset when the animals become active and on the move.

Like someone else said, recoil from a 270 wouldn't be my primary concern. A factor when buying any scope yes, but you're not mounting this on a .375 or such.

Entry VX lines should serve you well.

Just as an example, I own:

  • Leupold VX2 --- 3-9x40 -- $400
  • Burris E1 ------- 3-9x40 -- $300
  • Redfield -------- 3-9x40 -- $200
  • Lyman ---------- 3-9x40 -- Free (old and well-used, from a relative)

and yes, of course my fav is the Leupold, BUT really, when using them ..
I can NOT see that any one is markedly superior to another.
They all are built like tanks, all hold zero perfectly,
they all have low distortion and high light transmission.

And by the way, I'm getting back into using iron sights .. :)

I have a leupold vx-2 that's on my weatherby vanguard chambered in 270. Picked it up at cabelas for 399. Great scope. I would definitely recommend it

When I got my 270 I put a Bushnell Dusk & Dawn 3-9 with illuminated reticle on for $150 as that was all I could afford at that time. 4 years later it is still on there and hasn't lost zero. It has served me well and the glass is clear.

I just put a vortex dimondback hp 3-12 on my 270wsm, and it is by far the nicest hunting scope I own! It was 500$ out the door and it is a bit heavyer than most 3-9 hunting scopes but I thing the extra magnification gets the nod over the extra weight! Did I mention it is CLEAR! The other scopes I have to compare it to are a buris full feild 2 3-9 and a bushnell 3200 4-12, and a bushnell ledgend 2-7 hands down the vortex is the winner! I know the others are a bit cheaper but I don't think they are even close!

Leupold VXII 3-9x40mm

Or if you want to go a bit 'econo' comparatively:

Redfield Revolution 3-9x40mm or

Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40mm

I'd be perfectly happy with any of the above on any rifle I'd hunt with.

You're quite correct. The Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40mm, while an 'econo' level choice, it's a fairly decent choice. My Daughter & Son In Law gave me one a while back and I mounted it on my recently acquired Zastava in '.366 Wagner'

And it performs well.

I recently picked up another Elite the same except this one has a mat stainless looking finish. I'll have to pick something up appropriate to mount it on. Oh, and Ted pointed out a feature of the 3200 to me that I'm sure I'll come to appreciate. The 'rain guard' coating on the lenses:cool:.
