Hello there folks,

Does anybody have any suggestions for some good reading about deer hunting or small game? This will be my first fall hunting on my own. I am away from my friends and family for the remainder of the summer so asking hunters is not a practical option, just looking for some information I can start going over.

Any help is appreciated.

Brett.

Shots at whitetails. A friend bought it for me I never finished it. It seems like its meant for the beginner. The best advise I can give is get out and watch the game. You will learn much more then by reading

I know you said deer hunting, but every hunter should read "man eaters of Tsavo". Its the book that "the ghost and the darkness" was based on. Hunting man eating lions, doesn't get better than that.

During my younger days when my best friend and myself wanted to go WT deer hunting for the first time, his father insisted we read at least one well recommended book title on this subject. IIRC, it was The Deer of North America by Lenard La Rue III??
Quite an informed and well researched book actually by this game biologist/photographer, circa mid-late 1970s.

I would second anything by Larry Benoit. He has some pretty good insight into tracking and is a fairly good story teller. If you don't own a Rem 7600/760 now, you'll want one, in 30-06 of course, by the time you're done your read. Leonard Lee Rue also has some exceptional stuff, as does Erwin A. Bauer. Both are highly regarded wildlife photographers and naturalists. I'd give the edge to Rue howoever in terms of depth of knowledge. If you simply want to be inspired, The Deer Hunter's Book- its a collection of deer hunting stories that will deff have you sorting your gear and oiling your boots well before November (it includes two pieces by Benoit- one in which he spends thirteen days after one particular buck- cool read).

You don't have to be an archer to appreciate his work, but it helps: Become The Arrow by expert archer Byron Ferguson. There is some interesting reading concerning his theory on moon phases and such. No, not night time hunting, but certain times of the month that deer are more prone to be active, moving & feeding etc. Any deer hunter can gleen excellent information from his book.
