Just had the second Mossberg I purchased in a week arrive home. Both older models, but in great shape. One is a boltgun a 340A-B, clip fed, appears to have seen very little use. This is likely to be a very accurate rifle. The other is a 351K, a tube-fed semi-auto, also in real nice shape, considering it is almost 50 years old. This is the first semi auto I have bought in over 25 years. I have just cleaned it up and tested it for reliable function, and it passed perfectly. I test a semi by mixing a whole bunch of different ammo and running it through to see if there are any FTF's or FTE's. This one digested everything without a hitch. Next is accuracy testing. While I have several super accurate Remington 22 rimfires [541's and 581's], these old Mossbergs are a hidden treasure. Inexpensive and they deliver very good performance, even though they may not win any beauty contests. FWIW, I also have 3 - 146B bolt action 22 rimfires. Any will Kill the silhouette rams at 100 meters with boring regularity. Regards, Eagleye.

Eagleye it sounds like an Awesome collection of 146Bs. :)

I love Mossberg .22s. :)

I use a 46M (b) in silhouette, she still shoots better then I do, but I was at the range yesterday nailing golf balls at 50 yards all the way out to 100. :)

I don't know if you know about this or not, but Havlin has Weaver rail scope mounts for these older Mossys, and they use the Mossberg mount holes from the factory. :)

Also Frank keep you eyes open at Gunshows, as I have seen a few 340Ks spring up from time to time.

I wish they would re introduce the 640k series in a deluxe line, they were awesome 22 mag rifles.
Frank; How I agree with you!! I bought a 640K "Chuckster" Brand new in 1964. In a moment of weakness in 1972, I sold it to an acquaintance who now absolutely refuses to sell it back. It was an accurate 22 Mag, and I regret letting it go. If I ever get a chance on another one, I will buy it in a second. Regards, Eagleye.

Well, I took these two out to the range this afternoon. Perfect weather, overcast, no wind. Sighted them in [or tried to] The 351K was an easy sight in, but the rings I got for the 340 had something wrong with them, since I could not get enough adjustment to move POI left to center. Swapped the rings around, and lo and behold, now I couldn't get it to go right enough. So I shot for groups only, since the closest I could get was about 4" to the right. [I bought new rings already]
I shot at 50 meters, and the 351k made groups under ½" with 3 types of ammo, the rest varied between .56 and .85" @ 50. The 340 posted several groups under the ½" with the best one going .31" [all 5-shot groups.] I did not shoot any match ammo, so I'm sure there is room for improvement. I did discover that the 351k [semi] does not like Velocitors, poor groups and a failure to recock from that ammo. I plinked a bit, knocking off 12 ga shotgun empties with a fair bit of regularity at 25 meters. All in all, I'm very pleased! Regards, Eagleye

Would you believe my luck! Shortly after I posted this, a fellow gunnut put up a very nice looking 640KA for sale on the EE forum. Only catch...he had a 340KA that he wouldn't sell separately. So......I bought them both.[Thanks Martin!:) ] Just waiting to receive them and try out that 640KA. The 340KA will probably stay here too. Regards, Eagleye

I agree with you guys on the hidden qualities of the old Mossbergs. And i have begun to appreciate the Marlin quality also. The Marlin 81s i have along with the 990L and .22 mag.25MN...shoot holes that seem too be only one but i know I shot more. and this is out to 100 yards open field. Bipod and shoulder hold. Thanks Eagle eye.

What are you guys doing? Don't you know how contagious Mossberg-itis is?

Take 2 bricks, and head to the range. It may too late.I feel the cravings for another one!

Funny, a thread that's a few years old seems antiquated, the rifles in question are decades old, and could go toe to toe with any newer offerings...
