Some help with .223 please...

I'm having a problem with Speer 62gr FMJ BT, running through a 1/9 twist 20inch barrel.

What I've tried so far is;
23.5grs IMR 4895, best was 2 moa
21.5, 22.5, 23.5 grs H322, best was 21.5 for 1.75 moa
18.5, 19.5, 20.5 grs IMR 4198, best was 19.5 for 1.5 moa

All the above loads are with Winchester brass, and Winchester small rifle primers. C.O.L. was 2.250"

It was 0*, very light rain and very little wind, but I finished the day using my pet load with a .488 result so I know the rifle's doing it's job.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. If I need a different powder or magnum primers, I can do that.

Those are pretty light loads with a fairly slow powder.
Bump the powder charge to the 25 grain range (working up of course).
The Speer 62 grainers are ok, but they are not a match bullet by any stretch - 2 moa is about average for them.

I would ditch the bullets, and go with Berger 60 grain Match, switch the powder to H4895, use Lapua brass, and CCI BR-4 primers. Try 10 thou off the lands, as well as 10 thou into the lands. You likely have room to work the powder up to 25 grains or so, watching for pressure signs.
 
Thanks guys. I did kind of 'jump the gun';) when I bought these bullets. I've been using Hornady V-MAX, and Nosler Ballistic Tip both in 60 gr, V's being my favorite. I found the Speers in bulk for half the price of the above. Live and learn, right?

Drop to a lighter bullet....say 52 or 55 gr HPBT.
 
I have a Tikka T3 varmint in 223, the first recipie I tried through it gave me a 5 shot 0.57 inch group at 100 yds. Might be worth a try for you....

23.1 grs IMR 4320
CCI Benchrest primers
Sierra Match king 69 gr BTHP
OAL 57.6 mm
 
My Savage 10FP 1-9" twist. I've only tried Benchmark and Varget. Found Varget better

Bullet = Hornady 68Gr Match
Powder = Varget 25.5Gr
Chrony Speed = 2950 - 3000FPS
0.5" or less groups off bipod at 100yd
1" group at 200yd with about 3" drop
1"
 
as far as "bulk" for half, it depends on the bullet- i get bulk winchester 65's and actually group BETTER than my more expensive 70 grain speer- so don't let PRICE factor into- your rifle likes what it likes, and its up to you to find that out- my personal recipe is 25 grains of 748, cci small rifle magnum primer, and a 65 grain winchester or remington slug-but i'm running a 1/7 NATO twist, not 1/9- i also use 748 in my 308s- that's why - i buy the stuff in KEGS
 
I agree. You are probably wasting your time trying to get the speer to work. I had a box and they shot much worse then winchester or hornady bulk, which shot much much worse than match bullets.

223 is not an expensive round to load for. I think I am paying like a 130.00 shipped for a 600 bullet box hornady 80 grain amax. Not recommended for your twist, I am just saying that decent bullets in 223 are not terribly expensive.
