Some initial impressions on the Uzkon AS46 mag fed shotgun I just received today.

Overall Construction seems very good.
  • Nice grippy pistol grip
  • Stock is hollow, but feels fairly solid.
  • Plastic trigger guard feels very solid
  • A little worried about the plastic mag well. Feels like it may break in the cold weather if I drop the shotgun on it (I'm thinking about using this for 3-gun).
  • Recoil pad feels very soft and foregiving

Stock sights
  • Rear and front sights have a choice of 4 configurations (peep, peep in square blade, notch, and post)
  • Rear sight adjusts for windage and elevation using thumbwheels
  • With the fixed stock, can't get a good cheek weld as the rear and front sights sit fairly high. May not be an issue with the AR style stock.
  • Sights are plastic, fairly well made and easy to slide on and fixed in place with a pushbutton. Feels fairly sturdy, but don't think they will take much abuse.
  • Mounted a TRS25 directly on the top rail, seems about the right height.

Mags
  • Only have the 5 round mag right now (was initially advertised with a 10 round mag, have sent an email out to N.A.S. about this).
  • Fairly stiff insertion and it does not drop free - needs a firm pull to get it out. Will see if I can polish that out later.
  • Mag release is definitely out of reach while your strong hand is on the pistol grip.

Pump action

  • [*]Very smooth.
[*]It takes ~6lbs to initiate moving the pump and ~12 lbs to fully retract the pump.
[*]Definitely want a hand guard on the pump to help keep my hand in place. Maybe an angled grip with a forward lip.
[*]No way to lock the action open. (will have to see if my range will allow me to use chamber flags instead)
[*]The bolt is locked when the pump foregrip is in the forward position
[*]The foregrip does not lock in the forward position like an 870. It's held in place by the spring action.
[*]Trigger can be activated when the action is not locked (see video below). Will have to be careful here as I don't want to fire out of battery if I am shooting a course of fire under speed.

Barrel
  • 13 1/2" long.
  • Threaded for breeching flash hider.
  • Not threaded for chokes. I have a question out to N.A.S. as to what the choke the barrel is manufactured with.

Overall, very happy with the value and quality of this shotgun. Hope to get it out to the range this week.

I have one with the folding ar stock and since it is sloping the factory sights are too high to be able to get a cheek weld. I put a fastfire on mine and ditched the sights. The folding stock is pretty solid and you can fire with the stock folded.

Update from N.A.S, have pasted in their email response below. I had sent them an email regarding the mags (only 1 x 5 round mag included, advertised 1 x 10 round mag), and also asking about the barrel was advertised as being threaded for screw in chokes. Not a straightforward situation. I appreciated the very quick responses from N.A.S. and the way they are handling this.

Good morning Winston,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I hope I don't miss any of the questions you are asking. We had the opportunity to work closely with distributor throughout the launch of this product.

Originally there was to be 1x10 round magazine. Then it changed to 2x5 round magazines. And then it switched to 1x5 round magazine. We were as baffled as most at the swift changes. However, this was the reasoning behind them and it was out of our control.

All of the magazines, 5 - 10 - 15 round fit perfectly and cycled into the BR99 Semi-Auto mag fed model. On the request of certain organizations, all 10 round magazines were stripped from the boxes and we had to ship them back to the distributor until the issue could be resolved. The distributor didn't have enough 5 round magazines to send two in each box hence the reason for the single mag. For our customers, we will be getting extra mags in various capacities shortly once they are released. The BR99 have already been approved but there are several other mag fed semi-auto models still waiting on their proprietary parts so they will not accept the AS46 magazines.(Hope this isn't too much of a run on paragraph). In the interest of public safety, all of the larger capacity mags are being held with the distributor until further notice. I am working hard to ensure that everyone who initially ordered the AS46 with magazines are fairly taken care for the inconvenience.

Okay.... onto the next matter.

The chokes. These models were all supposed to come with threaded chokes. Much to our surprise they did not. We took the liberty to arrange through our distributor to purchase extra chrome lined barrels with choke kits that will be available to be ordered. We will be offering pre-sale customers only, the opportunity to add an extra threaded barrel to their order for a reduced price.

I'm hoping to get pictures from the distributor about the foregrips and short forend but have not received them as of yet and we don't currently have them in stock.

I'll work on attempting to locate you a video about field stripping the AS46.

Thanks for you patience Winston. This AS46 along with several other shotgun launches have proven to be difficult. The best part is that these issues are being slowly but surely resolved thanks to the diligence of our distributor.

Please email me directly should you have any further questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

just got to open mine today and was surprised at the lack of chokes and non threaded barrel, also the 5 round mag, i also paid for the folding stock and received a fixed one. other than that pretty much what i expected. I intend to send off an email as well.
i will probably add my own optics as i agree the stock ones are too high.
my mag is pretty tight and doesn't drop free.

I'm finding it remarkable that you guys are OK with your guns that arrived not-as-described.

If I bought a folding stocked shotgun with threaded choke tubes and 2 mags, but got a gun with one mag, not choke tubes and a fixed stock, I'd be livid. That the retailer is going to sell a threaded second barrel at a reduced price is small consolation.

Frankly, if I had jumped at these, I'd be returning my purchase for not being what I paid for. Your mileage may vary.

well I just got mine and found the issues, i figured everyone makes mistakes and i sent them an email to let them know.
I figured they at least needed a chance to make things right and their response will dictate my next move.
No point in getting mad until they have a chance to make things right

Speaking for myself, I and not "OK" with the situation. I do however recognize that this is a new product and the situation was beyond the distributors control. I have had great service from N.A.S. before and they are very forthcoming in their communications, so I'm willing to wait and see what happens :)

Were I NAS, I would offer customers the option to return for full refund and re-list them as they are, not as NAS wished them to be. Oh, and I'd stop dealing with TW - they seem to not be a good business partner.

We also sell this product. You have to understand that it's not really the importers fault. When dealing with other pets of the world. Find details some time get missed

On the note we have 10rd mag in stock now .

All customers who pre-ordered and received their items, will be receiving an email from me in regards to rectifying the miscommunication from distributor to dealer to consumer.

We have just received all our 10 round magazines plus that we had been waiting on for some time. Much to our dismay, we have not received the 15 round mags as of yet.

Any direct questions, please email me at cmcleod@nasgunsandammo.com

Finally got a chance to get out to the range and run some rounds through. Finding this a really fun shotgun :)

The butt pad is pretty soft and soaks up the recoil very nicely. Recoil feels better than an 870 express, about the same as a nice Wingmaster. This baby likes to have a firm hand to extract consistently and feed the next round properly. Tentative or slow can result in failure to eject, or miss-feeds. A common one was the spent shell not ejecting, that would then cause the next round to jam. Once I started stroking that pump with authority, I didn't have any problems.

Ammo tested was Winchester and Federal target loads. The Winchester seemed to feed a little smoother and easier.

Here's the shot pattern at 5 yards

Here's the shot pattern at 10 yards - definitely think I'll be needing to swap in the barrel with screw in chokes once it's available.

couple more observations:

When loading the mag (just have the 5 round mag right now), be careful not to push the rim of the round behind the rim of the round below it. If it does get behind the round below it, it may get stuck on the forward stroke and fail to feed forward if rely on spring power alone to move the pump forward. If you stroke forward with authority, it will still feed ok.

The mag tube retaining nut had retaining holes drilled in it, but there is no spring loaded retention ball to keep it in place. It did loosen up after 25 rounds, so something to keep an eye on.
