Caption Lloyd Samuel BREADNER
Additional Information Born in Carleton Place, Ontario, in 1894, Breadner was released from the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1919. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) commissioned him as squadron leader on its formation in 1920. He served in a variety of senior capacities during the Second World War, and was promoted to air chief marshal on 25 November 1945. He died in 1952.

Additional Information Many pilots carried revolvers. Canadian pilot Lloyd Breadner, who rose to command the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, used this 1911 Colt revolver and specially adapted holster.

Caption Colt .45 Calibre Automatic Pistol
Additional Information In 1914, the Department of Militia and Defence purchased 5,000 semi-automatic pistols from the Colt Company of the United States for use by officers and non-commissioned officers of the 1st Canadian Division. The new 'Government Model' pistol was a semi-automatic holding eight .45 calibre cartridges in the detachable magazine housed within the grip. The owner’s name and unit, Captain F.F.M. Brown of the 35th Battalion, are etched on this example.

Caption Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae
Additional Information Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. The poem In Flanders Fields, written by John McCrae at the Second Battle of Ypres, has become the most famous poem of the war.John McCrae, a surgeon from Guelph, Ontario, witnessed the horrors of war at Ypres as he operated on maimed and dying soldiers. Shattered by the death of a close friend, he composed his famous poem in less than an hour. McCrae continued to serve throughout the war, but died of pneumonia in 1918. McCrae's pistol Although remembered as a surgeon and poet, John McCrae also served as an artillery lieutenant in the South African War.

He was appointed major, medical officer, with the 1st Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), in September 1914. His famous poem, "In Flanders' Fields," was published in Punch in December 1915. He was admitted to 14 Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, France, on 26 January 1918 and died there two days later.

There are many other 1911 and 1911A1's in the collection, but no pictures
And sadly as far as I know these pistols will not be on public display, they are hidden in the vaults of the Canadian war museum here in Ottawa. Maybe someday the collection will be made into a small arms museum?
