some news regarding the government disposal of the Hi-power!

some board members will recall a number of news paper articles regarding the official adoption of a different type of sidearm for the majority of canadian forces. someone said it was a SIG I think. 9mm of course. well this really bothered me. so, I sat down and wrote a letter to the office of the Prime Minister basically trying to plead with the government to reconsider their decision to melt down tens of thousands of pistols worth not only a large amount of capital but huge historical value. you watch the news of Canadian troops in Afghanistan and whats the first thing you see? their trusty hi-power strapped to their chest, always ready. so fast-forward a few months later I get a reply from the office of the Prime Minister. heres what they said

I would like to acknowledge receipt of your correspondance addressed to the Prime Minister regarding the Hi-power pistols used by the Canadian Forces.

You may be assured that your comments have been noted. I have taken the liberty of forwarding a copy of your correspondance to the Honourable Peter Mackay, Minister of National Defence, so that he may also be aware of your views.

Thank you for writing.

well this had me feeling cautiously hopeful. I recieved this on the 11th of jan. of this year.

fast forward to today, I check the mail box and what do I find, a letter from Peter MacKay himself! heres what he had to say regarding the Hi-power dilemma.


Your letter of November 2, 2011, concerning the disposal of Canadian Forces Browning Hi-power pistols was forwarded to me by the office of the Prime Minister. Thank you for writing.

Our government is aware of the interests that collectors have in this sidearm. The Browning Hi-power pistol will continue to be used by Canadian Forces members for years to come. When the sidearm is declared surplus, we will ensure that museums throughout the country have access to it, and we are considering other options for disposal of this item, including the possibility of providing collectors with an opportunity to purchase a select number of Browing Hi-power pistols. I trust this information is of assistance, and thank you again for writing.

Typical Government form letter sent to many people recently, does not commit the Government to anything concrete.
 
From what I last heard the General Service Pistol replacement program has been canned, so yes we will be using them "for years to come"..

But the fact that a politician actually bothered to respond is indeed encouraging. Let us just hope that when they finally are retired, we find ourselves under the "right" government. :)

Correct, and I really hope the controversy over the Hi Powers had nothing to do with it. I carried one overseas and I'd like to buy one (well, another one) as much as the next collector, but I do think something a little more up to date would be in order.

Since I live in Arizona, , your gubmint ain't gonna get the chance to melt down mine. :D

Of course that's if "da somali" don gets re-elected.
 
Maybe organizations such as the BCRA will get a chance to purchase HP's from the Government. The US government has the US military selling military equipment to select governments so that they can buy new equipment with the money they receive from the sales. Another place to look would be governments that received Canadian military aid in the past. I have a number of mint to new Inglis HP's that were surplused out this way. The paper showed the gun acceptance from Inglis to the Canadian military and then to the receiving european military. They never used them because they used US small arms.
