I took my son out and we went on a rabbit hunt, we took the 870 and some # 7 shot. We were in the rifle zone hunting bunnies with a shotgun, after taking one we decided to go further on down the gravel road in search of more critters. We came around the corner and were being motioned over to the side of the road, a security guard for the pipeline came over and asked us if we were shooting. He wasn't on his property that he was supposed to be guarding, so I drove away.
A couple days went by and we went out again in the same area. Anyone who is familiar with Vancouver Island knows about the rifle and shotgun zones, everyone that is except for this uninformed security twit.
On our drive out we meet up with the security guard and a cop, he asks us if we had been shooting. I said yes and the security twit sat there in his truck all cocky and proud. I began telling the cop that this is a rifle zone, but I don't shoot one around here and prefer a shotgun for small game. He said he knew about the shooting zones and he was just responding to the call as he had to. The officer asked us if we had any luck meanwhile looking into the open window and seeing the 870 laying on the back seat. I told him we got one the day earlier but none today. I asked the cop ,"don't you want to see my drivers or licence, hunting licence, PAL or registration"?
He said "no", he had a couple words with the security twit and all three of us drove off in different directions. That was kind of weird not to be asked for any ID of any kind, that cop was a very decent dude, I could tell he was not happy with being called out there for no reason, except for an overzealous security ####. There was some young guys on quads in the gravel pit watching the whole thing, they asked me if that security #### was causing problems. I told them what happened and they said they were being bothered at every turn by the same putz. Next thing I know the quads are driving up and down the dirt road kicking up a lot of dust, the wind was blowing the dust all into the spot where security #### was parked, what a shame.

-------------------UPDATE--------------------------------

I talked to the local CO here and he will be having a chat with the individual about interfering in a legal hunt and charges will be laid if he persists on taking matters into his own hands. I talked to the security outfit about their guard going out of his way to interfere with the legal activities of hunters, he assured me that no further harrassment will take place. He asked for a description of my vehicle and his guard was told to leave me alone. I love doing things the legal way , but I sure wanted to knock him out for the a**hole way he presented himself. I'm going back there to hunt for bunnies a soon as I buy more bunny shot!!

The guy sounds like what is known as a "fresh air inspector". Happened to me a few times during the many decades I've been hunting. Some farmer or land owner comes by and tries to convince you that duck season is not open or that your in a wildlife refuge. Just kindly tell the dude what your doing and continue hunting...just make sure your in the right!

I think it's great that the cop knew what was going on and was on the ball.

Personally, I think some sort of letter to the local police detachment congratulating them on reacting appropriately and not flying off the handle because of seeing a gun could be done?

I agree. There's no lack of criticism when they are a PITA, it should go both ways. Definitely go a long way toward giving LEO's a positive view of firearms users.

H Wally and 2fat2fly, that is a good idea. I am going into town probably tomorrow. I am going to drop by the local detachment and make a formal complaint if that #### interferes with me again. I hope the cop told him that it is an offence to interfere with me while I'm legally hunting. I think he did, I will convey my appreciation to the constable when I see him again, afterall this is a small town.

bring them some Tim Hortons gift cards :D

you sure the security guard wasnt just curious to see what you were doing the first day?? maybe he hunts as well and was just making conversation? or was he a #### from the start?

the reason I ask is because you said you just drove away after he asked you what you were shooting. Maybe he thought since you didnt answer you had something to hide....like he thought you were poaching or something

Credit where credit is due. I am sure a short letter to the CO thanking the constable for his general demeanour would be appreciated.

It is refreshing to here there are a handful of people left in government with some sense. I rarely meet them.

He was a #### from the start, he actually stopped his truck in front of me and started asking questions. He didn't say anything about who he worked for, just started out being an arrogant pushy prick. I didn't know him from the tree next to him, he was in a truck with no markings or decals showing that he worked for a security firm. As soon as he cut me off things didn't go good for him. A little diplomacy would have gone further than the rent a prick attitude he showed from the start.

Glad to read your update and see that things should work out! Always sucks when you're out having a good time and you run into someone who forgot to take his "little man syndrome" meds that morning.

Where was this, I live in Nanaimo and had a gaurd from "safety Net" scream out about private property and no hunting when we were in an area that had no signage posting private property.
