some people give bad advice to first time hunters here.

Put it in the right hole the first time if you want a second date...
There I fixed it, and wont give him anymore bad advise on women.
This is what this was about right?

If not, its commonly known that CGN is a bad place to come for unbiased advise.
This is the goddarn Ninnernet, and if you've ever used the search function, or google for example to look for info on a topic, you allways have to wade through irrelevant #### to get the answer your looking for...
So why should CGN be any different?
Nearly every thread is full of worthwhile reading info, and some bafflegarb.
Newb or not, most can pick through the two.
If it was all just straight info, with no BS, it would be Chuck Hawkes, not CGN. If you want the best unbiased info, thats the place to get it. :):):):):):). Its the inbetween humor, and pissing matches tht keep people coming here day in and day out. Oh yeah, and a bit of good info.

Some folks just have to learn to take it a bit more lightly...
Besides, some of the best advice was born out of a discussion on bad advice.
Take it how you will, but in most cases if a guy walked into any gunstore local to me asking for a 416 for a first rifle, they'd come out of the store knowing a ####load more than before they walked in, and likely with a 308, or 270, 30-06, 30-30, 12 guage, or something like that.

It's much like your average hunt camp. Some advice is informed opinion from the experienced, some is BS, some sarcastic, some just dead wrong. You need to have enough between the ears to figure out the good ones. If not, don't ask!

My flame suit is on.

Why is your flame suit on mike, afraid your gonna burn yourself with all your flaming? Seems to me you decided to start this thread, then anyone who disagreed, even with a valid argument, was a prick.

CGN'er in question just got his PAL, doesnt mean he just smelled burnt gunpowder for the first time. I started shooting when i was 8 (unofficially of course, if a liberal heard that they would ####, and ban 8 year olds)I of course, had to wait 10 long years to get a PAL. Point is, the day i got a PAL was not the day I became a shooter. Think this one through, why the hell would someone lay down money and hours of their timeto go through the licensing requirements, only because they think they might like being a gun owner? I am thinking that most guys who get there PAL have at least some trigger time under their belt, and likely a mentor to some degree.

......someone tell me why the .416 was a joke?! It's a fine hunting round, and perhaps it's a little bit overkill for deer or ground hogs, but how many rounds do you fire when out on a hunt? Who cares if it is $5 per round, some guys pay that for fancy "premium" ammunition!

Yes, there's some recoil involved with a .416, but if you hold on to it for dear life instead of caressing it like it was a .223 (or your imaginary girlfriend), you will hardly even bruise!

Best suggestion on the list and someone fesses up and says it was just a joke!

Oh my!! :runaway:

Let's face it, shooters and gun owners are the most opininated of any group of hobbiests! Everyone is an expert and thinks he/she/us have the answer to every question asked. I am an amateure radio operator. If we ask another operator a technical question, he/she will only give an answer if they they really are well versed on the subject. If not, they will suggest what other radio operator would know the answer. The same is true of photography. No one would dare tell a person what was the best camera for a given project, unless that person was an experienced photographer and knew what he/she was talking about. But not so when it is anything to do with guns!
When was the last time you read on these threads anyone say they really didn't know what calibre was best for what, or anything else?
Nuff said.

Excellent post. You are always going to want to cross reference any advice given (especially mine) here on these forums, and for that matter, you should even double check on what some of the sales staff try to tell you when your buying a rifle. They are opinionated, and motivated to sell.

My last post was a little bit tongue-in-cheek, (just in case you actually think people go ground-hogging with .416 Rigbys), but if you have folks that Support their opinions with facts, or put IMHO before their answer then they are usually not stringing you along!

And.......

My first hunting rifle is a .375 H+H, It was the first gun I bought, followed by a featherweight .308. I hate the featherweight, and I like the .375, so I scoped up the .375 and I use it!

I have shot everything from .22 up to .510 Wells, and I was fortunate enough to have a good friend who let me work my way up through the different levels of recoil slowly.

IMHO, you don't need anywhere near this much gun to hunt in NA unless you are going for bear. I will probably step down to a .30-06, or a .300wm when I have sufficient funds for it. If I liked my .308 more, I would probably have scoped it up instead of the .375 and it would have been my first hunting rifle, simply because it is a more practical caliber for a first time hunter (which I am too).

And if cheap ammo becomes available for .416 Rigbys, then there may be a few of us using them for ground-hogs, just because we can!
