Just when I was trying to reduce the number of rifles I have to ones I actually use, LOL! :D
Someone in the family is wanting to give me one of these rifles down the road and I don't know anything about them.

So before I say yes or no I thought I would ask fellow GunNutz.

It looks like original military iron sights.

Stepped barrel, stamped with:
Globe Firearms LTD
MODEL 098 CAL.. 8X57JS

The bore looks shiny with nice rifling, overall shape of the rifle is good, been hunted with a few rust spots on metal and handling marks on what looks to be some type of blond wood in a Monti carlo style stock. Bolt turned down.

I was going to take the barrel off to look for other info but noticed the screw holding the trigger guard has an extra smaller screw locking the larger main one in place and the smaller screws head is not in the best of shape (someone over the years used a hardware store screw driver on it)...it might be needing replacement.

Sorry I didn't have time to take pics it was getting late and we had a long drive home.

BTW when I took the bolt out I was playing with the safety and the rear of the bolt turned in my hand and could not get it turn back to be able to get it back in the rifle, DOH!
My little Husky Swedes don't do this.

Any info or trivia on this rifle model would be appreciated. :)
Thoughts? A keeper? A seller?

And yes I tried the search function here and kept getting
"Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

Globe Firearms Ltd company was a company in Ottawa that bought old military rifles and converted them into hunting rifles. That's a Model 98 Mauser.

I have owned two Globe Model 098's (although one was stamped 099 by accident I presume). Both were built using very late war production K98 actions without the guide rib on the bolt and round gas ports in the bolts. Both showed poor heat treating. One bolt was as hard as a hens face and actually had cracks around the locking lugs. The other bolt had one lug hard enough that a file wouldn't touch it and the other lug easily cut with the file.

A careful inspection by a qualified gunsmith would be my recommendation.

its sounds like the German K98. do you see any other markings? the swastika perhaps? does it look like this but sportrized?

The one I'm looking at looks like it was put in a modern wood stock.

I'll try to sort photobucket out and get some pics to put up.
