Typical "sporter" job.

It's a No4 Mk2 made by Royal Ordnance Factory Fazakerly, in August 1950. The fore-end has been shortened and the handguard removed. The metal looks intact. Replacement wood and metal bits like barrel bands can be found if you look for them.

Nice looking No.4

Should have used the Macro function for those pics of the markings. ;)

That looks like it might be a sporterizing job done by a manufacturer, and not a "bubba'd" rifle. Are the serial numbers matching?

"...has the wood been cut?..." Yep. Check the headspace before you shoot it. Even if the serial number on the back of the bolt handle matches the number on the receiver. That'd be 'matching numbers'. Matching numbers does not guarrantee that the bolt head has not been changed in 57 years.
"...that will improve with..." What ammo did you use? You'll find that a slip on recoil pad takes a lot of the hurt away too. Pachmayr makes one that won't cost you a mortgage payment.

"...where would...the numbers to match..." Back of the bolt handle and the serial number on the receiver. The 220,398 is the receiver S/N. The 'PF' is a prefix for Fazakerly.
"...recoil is not all that bad..." Wait until you shoot it wearing just a t-shirt. It's not the butt plate though. It's the narrow butt stock that is rounded on the edges.
