Okay I made a post in the wrong forum so here I am in the correct forum.

The initial question follows, plus one I just came up with.
I was looking at CDI Precision mag feed R700 kits. Anyone done this to good effect? Do any of the R700's feed from a mag? I'd like to have a 10 round magazine on a R700 in .308 I think...

Now, second question:
What's the best possible starting rifle in the price range of a Remington 700. I see some offerings from Weatherby, Savage, Tikka ect, and I know the R700 seems to be the most used when it comes to mil/leo applications. But what's the best starting platform out of the box?

To begin, I'd just like to take it out of the box, put on some $300 glass and hit 300 yard targets easily. Might this pe possible with R700 or competition?
Who should I go with?
 
As to the bottom metal, you will have issues getting it from the US as it is a restricted export, however Ed Begg from V-Bull Precison sells a mighty fine bottom metal system for the R-700 and Savage systems.

"best" firearm is impossible to define. Savage Remington and Tikka make really good rifles for your purposes, and they all shoot the same so get what you like and can afford.

True precison requires an accurate firearm, accurate ammunition and an accurate shooter and your shooting will only be as good as the worst of those three factors.

Beware of seeking advice from anonymous sources on the internet that have no investment in your choices - or who stand to profit form them. Stick with a good name, a comfortable gun and YOUR BUDGET. Have fun, and I guarantee this will not be your last gun.
 
HAHA I definitely know it won't be my last. I have 2 shotguns, a Model 99, a Marlin 60SN and an SKS already. I don't even have my PAL yet (it's all in my buddy's name and in his safe in his gun room at his house until my PAL arrives in the mail, I didn't wanna do anything illegal, but I still had to buy some guns!).

Anyway, I know the whole term "accurate gun" is sort of a misnomer, "accuracy" is a multifaceted concept dependent on lots of variables, as you mentioned. I'm just wondering if one has a great name over the others so far as being particularly receptive to excellent performance, given the satisfaction of said variables and all things being equal.

And no, I'm not going to rush out and drop coin on internet recommendations without due diligence of my own. Just askin guys "in the know" to point me in the right direction with their thoughts and opinions. :p Cause I know I can do all the research I want, but I do like to hear opinions from those who've "been there and done that."
 
700's have the most accessories available for them, followed by Savage 10/110 (and variations). Accurate rifles can be built up on both platforms. The Savage is available as a Stevens, and that's about the least expensive way into the sport. The least expensive 700 will be a sporter SPS. That's new, used might find you some better deals. Stick with the 700 platform. It's the most common, and arguably the most reliable. I learned this the hard way by trying to upgrade a rifle that didn't have any aftermarket support. I eventually had to sell everything and start over.

I good starting point for the 700 is the SPS line. Affordable, and readily available. They feature the same actions and barrels as the "Police" lines. I would recommend the 700 SPS Tactical OR the SPS Varmint. Basically the same except one has a 20" barrel vs the 26" barrel. The tactical version IMO has a better stock though. (Hogue Over Mold) Ellwood Eps has s**t tons of stock right now and a Tactical SPS can be had for $629. I recently upgraded to the Tactical version from the Varmint version myself. I like the short barrel better and to be honest velocity differences are irrelevant. (fact) The new R700 SPS's now come with an adjustable trigger from factory, they include the allen key and your range is between 1.5lbs and 4.5lbs. Another nice feature is the stock includes a pillar bedding block system, so arguably you do not need to pay a smith to bed it for you. (Unless you wanna compete in BR, but thats a whole other can of worms) So with a V-bull system installed that would be one slick set up for under 1200... And no smith fees to bed it or tune the trigger.

For the money theres nothing better the 700 SPS Tactical.
 
P&D had some great deals on the SPS in 308. Top it with a Bushnell 3200 10x and you've got a budget tactical rifle. It will probably do everything you want at the moment. You may decide later to upgrade to a full custom and $2K glass btu I don't doubt that you could sell a SPS Tactical with Farrell Rings and bases and a Bushy 10x on the EE in short order, should you decide that you want to. Hell, there might even be one or two in there as we speak!

Have you considered the mag extender? it is a 20$ part. I can't see many folks practicing their mag changes with a remington 700, so it must be the look that you are after. This will get you that look cheap.

As for which gun is better. It is like asking whether a ford or a chevy or a dodge is better. There all about the same, but some folks like some brands.
 
We are planning to bring in some CDI bottoms to have a look at. They use AI mags and are reasonably priced and, apparently, they have for the T3 as well. Let me know if you want something and we will add to the order.
