I have a savage 1899 take down parts rifle in .22 H.P., and I would like to get it shooting again. Over all it seems to be in nice shape; it is missing both pieces of wood and related hardware, as well as the takedown latch and the piece that I assume fastens to the rear of the forearm.
The wood I am not afraid to tackle myself (I made a butt stock for an 1899 last winter) but am not sure about re-building the take down mechanism.
Here are my questions for you gurus;
a) If I fit a locking piece into the new forearm to prevent the barrel from turning is it good to go as a one piece gun?
b) .22 H.P. isn't my 1st choice of a new cartridge to tackle. Will a .25-35 fit this carrier?
c) Will this barrel support being chambered to 25-35, and bored to .257"?
d)Am I better off just to part it out (is there much value in the parts?)
It seems to me it could be neat for sheep hunting, and a handy winter trapping gun.
PS it seems to be 1914 vintage, 20" barrel
Heres a bunch of photos and I welcome any suggestions thanks.
(The 1st photo shows it sitting in wood off a 1926 .303)
