Earlier this year, I stuck a red dot on a Savage A-17 I had. My daughter really liked it and wanted one on her Rascal. I figured why not and got to it.

After checking the parts bin I found a Vortex Venom and a Burris Glock mount. Perfect. Now all I had to do was drill the burris mount to match the mounting holes on the Rascal. To my surprise it is the same pattern as a Mossberg 590 which I already had made, so all I had to do was center and drill. First problem now was the bolt did not have enough clearance, so I snuck in a few 'shims' (washers) to raise the base. The mount went on good and holds up nice and solid.

The next problem for her was the cheek height. She switched to more of a chin weld then a cheek weld. Back to the parts bin and I dug out a piece of Kydex. got my shape cut, and mounted it using 1/4" hardware and chicago nuts. touched up with some black paint.

It was a fun night and I got her to do most of the work. I setup the drill press and aligned it, she drilled it. She also did the heat gun and I formed the Kydex.

What fun projects have you guys done with your kids?

That's great! Teaching her to be a real gunny. Nothing like giving a kid skills and a sense of empowerment to make the world fit her.

I know 50yo heavy equipment mechanics who are scared to try mounting a scope. Some people have odd ideas about working on guns.

How many little girls can use a drill press (assisted)?! Right on dad, what a great project!! She will be a handy kid before long! Thanks for sharing! :d

Now get some hollow points and let her shoot those things in the middle of the kitchen table. But outside not in the kitchen.
Good work.

While it doesn't look as nice, I find mounting red dots in the forward position in front of the ejection port to be pretty handy. Easier visual access to the chamber and keeps it well clear of the bolt handle to boot.

How did she do with the red dot? I think I'll get one for the kids' rascal...

So so the first time. After a few outtings she has gotten much better. In comparison to the iron sights she is better with the red dot. We were out the other day shooting old juice jugs.

That's great! I just picked up a Rascal on sale at Canadian Tire. To be honest, it's for me - but it'll go to little JohnnyCake when he's old enough. But for now, it's a backpack/quad box gun.

These are by far the best .22 single shots on the market!! I always take my wife out on the go with me, really like the home made cheek riser going to try and make one now !
