Generally hunting from a boat we drive it into some tall grass toss the camo on and blast away..

My question is could we have chest waders on jump out of the boat and shoot from the weeds/tall grass and bullrush? How far from the shore must we be ?? Any info would help...

If the boat is motorized it must have the motor lifted and be pulled up on shore or at anchor to meet the legal requirements

Not sure if this is Canada wide of just local for Lake St. Clair in Ontario. You must be within 300m of a standing weed bed or property stake line.

Here in NB the law reads all forward progress caused by a sail, motor or draught animal must have stopped. No need to have the motor up, or anchor down (It must be hard to chase cripples with the anchor down). The only requirement is that movement either occur due to the current or paddling, rowing or sculling.

I don't know of any law against getting out of the boat to hunt waterfowl.

In Ontario you can't shoot from a boat unless it's at waterfowl. (See page 26 of the reg summary)

You'd have to jump out, load then shoot to be legal. Also; keep in mind it's illegal to shoot at big game while it's swimming.

From what I've read the rules for distance from shore vary depending on the waterbody.. Worth a call to your local C.O. and ask specifically for the area you are hunting since it's not stated where you are hunting in this thread.

That's the same law here in MB and I'd say if it's legal to shoot out of a boat when conditions are met, it's certainly not against the law to shoot once you're out of it. :D

When the boat is equipped with a motor, the motor must be tilted up, or the boat anchored. When I had the hide on my boat for duck hunting these are the rules we played by with no issues from inspecting CO's. Same rules would apply for big game, but as some one has pointed the moose can not be swimming. Therefore it either must be in the boat with you or standing on shore at the time you shoot it. If you are in a self propelled water craft aka: canoe you can paddle and shoot at the same time. I am speaking of Ontario.

As far as distance from shore, at one time it used to be for waterfowl you had to be within 200 yds of a natural weed bed. That changed quite some time ago. We used to hunt with my blind boat half mile or better from shore and the CO's never took issue. (Georgian Bay) But you may be wise to check the finer points on that one in case it has changed again, and some rules may be water body specific.

Well it would be for shooting waterfowl last season a few times we would get the boat in weeds anchor and motor up like its been said, but I'm tempted to toss on chest waders and cover the boat. Just stand in the tall grass and water to shoot.. don't know if ill get hasseled that's all !

Where's the best place to find this information ?

I've already looked at the regulation book thays the first place I looked, ivr contacted the MNR and my Conservation Officer for further info. Can find anywhere abkut.jumping out of the boat and trekking through the swamp lol

wj, then whats so hard about it?
If it is legal to shoot from where the boat is then why would it not be legal to hunt from outside of the boat?
Maybe I am not seeing the solution to your dilema, but then again my school teachers always told me I was jumping to conclusion to fast.
You have a few months yet to find the answer to your question before ducks and geese open.

The amount of BAD INFORMATION here with regards to ONTARIO is astounding.

The laws are clearly printed in the hunting regs.

For waterfowl from a boat, the law is that the motor must be shut off and forward momentum of the boat must be stopped. That's it. You do not have to be anchored, you do not have to have the motor up, etc, etc.

For big game, you cannot discharge a firearm from a motorboat or anything towed by the boat.

You can hunt from a canoe or rowboat as long as there is no motor attached.

You cannot shoot a swimming animal but you can shoot an animal standing in water.

For the most part, yes it is legal. It's called body booting.

There are a few areas in Ontario that have restrictions as to where you can hunt but there are very localized. Wolfe Island, Rondeau Bay, Long Point, Presquile, etc.
