Someone talk me out of a Spuhr mount...

Hey guys,

I have a new (to me) Savage 110FCP HS in .338 Lapua that I am trying to set up with glass... I just put in an order for a Stiener T5Xi in 5-25 x 56 and I am expecting it any day now (so not really looking for advice/critisism on which optic). The issue I am having is that I am trying to decide on a mount for the scope. The scope has a 34mm main tube. The rifle has the oringinal 20 MOA rail that it came shipped from the factory with. Ideally, I would like to get the front objective bell as low to the bore centerline as practical.

I know there are plenty of options out there for rings, so which should I go with? I am leaning towards the Spuhr SP-4001 which has a 34mm ring diameter and a hight of 1.18" (30mm). I am kinda thinking that the Spuhr mount will give me about a 1/4" gap between the objective bell and the barrel... Can anyone with experience here confirm this before I buy? Maybe try to talk me out of the Spuhr mount? It is expensive and I know that there are cheaper options, but I thought as this is my only centerfire rifle at the moment, why not splurge a little? Is the Spuhr mount a waste of money/necessary? I know its a lot of questions, but I keep going back and forth on if I should spend that much on a mount and if it will even fit the way I want it to?

What would you do?

Thanks

Dave

I have that exact mount. It's phenomenal.
It's been off and back on my rifle more times than I can count, and it never loses zero.
Its modularity is second to none.

Spuhr Mounts are awesome - some of the best out there.

I wanted my scopes as low as possible so I use the Spuhr rings. With a heavy contour barrel and a 56MM objective they get about as close as you can reasonably get.

You are sending a couple bucks down range with each squeeze, the rings will be an insignificant cost soon enough - might as well splurge.

I don’t know what your barrel contour is like, but this is a 30MOA rail with a 56mm objective.

Barrel contour is pretty heavy! I'd say at least as heavy as the one you show there. Thanks for the picture. It helps me a lot!

I would also consider a Near mount. Phenomenal quality and a local Canadian manufacturer. I found a Near mount to be more elegant/better looking than Spuhr.

I also use a Near Alpha mount on my S&B, it’s cheaper then Spuhr but still amazing in quality, 100% repeatable zero when taking the optics on/off. you can’t go wrong with Near or Spuhr.

Do not get the Spuhr mount.

There. I tried. Enjoy your new rifle.

I have had Spuhr and Near mounts. They are both great mounts but I sold my all my Spuhr in favour of Near. I prefer the look of the Near and to me the quality is the best I have seen( at least in my opinion, yours may differ).

So I ordered the Spuhr mount...SP-4001 to be exact. Hope to have it in hand soon! Thanks for all the help guys. Like I said, I’ll post pics once it’s on and set up.

BTW, Near was on my radar too...I actually prefer the look of the Spuhr and found some of the features/inovations interesting (built in level, better sight of turrets etc....) just my opinion.

Got it from Go Big Tactical. Super easy to deal with and they got it out for shipping Uber fast!

Weird I have the same rifle, you are saying the factory pic rail is 20 MOA? That means its slanted correct? That would explain a lot... thanks! lol
