Something a little "more"

If I had just purchased one really nice rifle instead of everything in my safe I could have a hell of a nice rifle. Even if I sold all my centerfire rifles and kept my rimfires, handguns and shotguns I could shop pretty much anywhere to buy my one and only rifle. But then would I want to bounce it around on a quad or on a location? Would I cry like a little girl with a skinned knee if I slipped crossing a screen slope? Would I regret my chosen chambering when standing 7 yards from a homicidal bull elephant or 400 yards from a trophy stone sheep? Nah, there's a time and place for all of them.

An eclectic mix keeps things interesting.

Would the Browning A-BOLT belong in this class? I've never owned a Browning or even held one. Or is it on par with the entry level Remington and Savage.

Actually, never mind on the A-Bolt. It seems pretty much the same as the Remington or Savage. A move sideways. I have the bug for a Kimber or Forbes.

Cheers.

This gal does it for me...........
Tikka M65 in 6.5x55.

Kamlooky ... is that a genuine "TIKKA" marked M65 in 6.5x55 or an Ithaca LSA65 (by Tikka) curious cause I have an LSA 65 in 6.5x55 and when i mentioned that I had a Tikka M65 to a gentleman that was involved with importing the Tikka M65/M55 he got real excited and kept questioning me about it till I said LSA - and then he calmed down; according to him there were LSA's brought into Canada in 6.5x55 but no Tikka M65 marked rifles in 6.5x55 imported into Canada.!?!?!??! who knows - but that was his view.

I pretty much agree with this.

I've had a pile of Savages, Remingtons, Winchesters, and lately Rugers. Part of the fun of being a gun nut is having a bevy of tools for every job, and buying/selling them as required to try something new.

Lately I have an itch for a 'nicer' rifle, and am looking at Sako, Kimber and Cooper rifles, but I'm still attracted to Remington and Winchester models that will do the upcoming jobs that I have in mind (Alberta sheep and elk, and Africa in a few years).

My "really a little more" gun would be a double rifle... the venerable Mr. Hipwell will have some of my money yet LOL.

Don't count out the two Tonys. TradeEx has some nice ones too.

Now that you asked Stewie . . . are you any further ahead?
I started a list a few years ago and there are over 45 guns that I have owned.
Some I regret selling but it was all part of the learning process.
Fit and feel are starters.
Purpose and performance follow.
My first center fire rifle was a Remington and I continue to be a subscriber.
How many guys would trust their wives to buy them a gun?
How many guys would even trust a guy to buy them a gun, optics or a knife?

Left side receiver is stamped M65.
The part fluted barrel is sort of unique.
Haven't seen another one around with it..........yet.
You may be able to enlarge the photo to zero in on it.

Sounds like you've made a decision. Your only other consideration is if the rifles from either of those two manufacturers lack features you would prefer to have, which might make the choice of a full custom rifle, attractive. The full custom route gives you control over the entire specification, so its important to have a clear idea of what the finished product should look like, and be able to communicate that idea to the builder. There will undoubtedly be some negotiation with the builder due to the nonavailability of certain parts, and how inflexibility on your part could have a significant impact on the time it takes to complete the project. Therein lies the greatest disadvantaged of a full custom rifle, there is no instant gratification, where as a semi-custom rifle like a Forbes, Kimber, or Montana can be bought off the rack.

Thanks! Tikka for sure - and agreed it is unique. I saw a fluted barrel once before (in pictures only and advertised briefly here on CGN) but IIRC it was a shorter barrel and fluted to almost the last 2 inches (approx.) I wonder what they called that version; if they had a specific model name? Looks VERY nice!

No, I'm not further ahead at this point. Only a bit wiser as to what I do and don't want. There are a lot of choices available, and I am not a wealthy man by any means. There aren't any regrets. That Tikka is a very nice rifle.
