That some so called hunters will buy a $40,000 truck, a $10,000 quad, and cheap out on the most important piece of equipment .....a good rifle. These are the guys out there with the beat up underpowered junk that wound and traumatize game and then wonder why people question their ethics...or lack there of.

 Its sometimes.... well almost always the shooters fault not the rifle that the animal is wounded and gets away... So don't blame the rifle, blame the person.

How much did you pay for your .303? :p

A $300 rifle that shoots MOA will shoot as well as a $1500 that also shoot's MOA. That just leaves the shooter as the final equation, not the rifle. You should be more concerned about people using poor choices bullet wise, or shooting beyond their maximum range. I think hunters will be better served to buy a cheap rifle and a rangfinder instead of expensive rifles.

So I don't own a 40K truck and I don't own a quad, but I own too many rifles(ask my wife). And they range from firesale specials to custom built. What's the big deal.
I have no issue with what a guy shoots, as long as he can shoot it.
A good rifle does'nt have to be expensive, the Stevens 200's proove that, and add a $250.00, 3200 Bushnell, and your good to go. <$600.00 any where I shop.
The issue is'nt power it's accuracy, and I don't mean match grade accuracy, I mean the ability to consistantly hit a paper plate(8"-10") at a range you will call effective and respect that limit.
Your accusation about under powered and junk, shows your lack of knowledge in this area. It's all about where you place the pill, not how much pill you mis place.

Somthing I have noticed over the years is people think equipment is more important than skill.

Give me a 10$ rifle that jambs and shoots 8" groups with wet ammo and I will still get my buck, and i will do it with one shot too.

Lefty ####, I believe the gentleman may have been referring to junk not cheap, I personally am quite enamored with cheap, however junk at any price is still junk.
Over the years I have witnessed many a fine firearm turned into junk by throwbacks who simply do not care about their equipment, on the other hand I have also seen cheap firearms come through with flying colours as they were maintained according to their needs.
Please note that I do not label "extensively used" as not maintained, I do however consider rust, unrepaired damage and lack of cleaning as not being maintained.
Regards, J Stuart.

Ps; what really gets me is the same throwbacks insist on pulling their rusting, broken piece of junk out of whatever cesspit it is kept in, then boring me to tears whilst regaling me with bulldust as to how well they can shoot out to 500 yards with the unmitigated piece of (junk WILL suffice), My favourite bull is the one that a local keeps espousing, HIS rifle is sighted smack on at 100 yards yet it is still rising at 350 yards, further I have also noticed that when at the range he always has an excuse as to why he is such a prick of a shot.

And then there is me, living on PEI (with no deer, bears moose etc.) I have 4 rifles suitable for large game but I do not have a truck or a quad... what the hell is wrong with me?

I could be wrong, but you do sound like a man who has his priorities right.

Republic of Alberta, stick around, the way the international governments are going you may get your wish, you will be have to hunt with a stick, a blunt one, I on the other hand shall oil and fire-harden MY stick, but rest assured it will be the nicest, most classic stick on the block, WHY....because I can.

I find it more common for the average guy to skimp on his ammo quality. He will drive away from the store with a box of Federal Power Shocks or WInchester Power Points, in his $55,000 diesel pickup. The extra $10 a box to upgrade to Fusion or Hornady Interlock is out of the question, let alone an extra $20-30 for super premium ammo with Accubonds, Partitions, TSX, Aframes, etc

Most guys also top their decent rifles with a $150 scope, or they buy $200 binoculars, etc.

There is the few exceptions that have Swarvoski binocs, Leupold scopes, premium ammo, and pull away with a $4000 4x4 that runs just fine.

To each their own I suppose...:D

Strange... In my part of the world, many many many hunters talk about how they got their 1500$ bucks rifle with their 600$ scope, and 60$ a box ammo. All in .300, 7mm, in ultra-big-super-powerfull-big-brass-maxi-magnum rifles. Still, they will usually make 3-4 years out of one box of ammo( as for them practice is something not invented yet ). But someday you see them shooting their semi-auto monsters, they will usually be so scared of the shot it's not even funny. Think flinch times 9999999999999. And they will never know how, but they will miss their moose at 3000 feets with 5 mags. The next day, they are at the gun shop, where the sales guys tells them : Well that's totally normal, you should have the all new twenty-pounds-.338-ultra-maxi-magnum-20MOA 3000$ rifle... And then we go again.....

Like many, I've seen much of it...

Guys that spend $$$ on thier truck, quad and camo, but thinkthat buying premium ammo is a "ripoff"

Guys that have ####ty EVERYTHING, but still are excellent hunters

Guys that top a $1500+++ rifle wiht a Tasco

etc etc

Here is how I spend my money, in no particular order

Good boots- You can't walk for long in crap, especially sidehills!!

Optics- Gotta find the stuff, so excellent binos are key. Spotting scope can vary depending on your needs

Good clothes- No use in shivering int he cold, or bakingin the sun

Good camp gear- Can range form a nice BBQ for the truck acess hunters to a flyweight tent and MSR stove for the hikers. Good GPS/Compass/map included...

Good knife- It shoudln't be a Rambo giant knife, a 4" blade is fine, but it's gotta be able to take an edge and keep it.

RELIABLE rifle- I can't stress this enough. You need a reliable rifle more than you need a rifle that will put every bullet in the same hole at 100 yards.
Yes, you want accuracy, but you want a BANG and a positive eject and feeding more.

PRACTICE AMMO- To ski well, you need to do it often. To play tennis well, you need to do it often. Same wiht guns and shooting. You want to shoot well? SHOOT ALOT!!

I still want a quad for fun runing around...But a $10 000 qud isn't worht as much to me as a $900 pair of custom boots!:D

Nothing wrong with you, other than your a gun nut.

I know a few really good and dedicated Hunters that shoot POS 200 dollar Parker Hale Rifles  and they put B & C animals down just about every year.

Killing an animal is the easy part........just about any rifle that shoots half assed straight will do the deed.

Knowing how to Find the "Worthy" critters to shoot however should be one's first concern.......not how much the rifle cost that kills it:rolleyes:
