A guy that can glass well is going to find more animals with a pair of cheap binos than the unskilled guy with the Swaros- But when that skilled guy gets his hands on the Swaros, he will be that much better.
And if you are glassing for sheep, the guy using the cheap binos will have plenty of eyestrain and will likely not see some sheep as a result.
Of course the equipment vs skill issue depends greatly on what you hunt.If you only hunt deer, almost anyone can go out and kill a legal deer in a day even if he is not overly skilled.I usually introduce new people to hunting by taking them on a hunt for antlerless mule deer, because it is so easy to be successful. So easy in fact, that I certainly wouldn't brag about killing one every year with a single shot. Then again if you are holding out for a huge buck,it takes much more patience and skill to be consistently successful.
If you hunt goats, sheep or pronghorn, quality optics can be a huge factor as far as your success. You also want good boots for any mountain hunting,as blistered feet will take all of the fun out of a hunt in short order.Shots on pronghorn can also be much longer than is typical with other game,so a scope and a rangefinder can be an advantage.
Hunting for me is not all about whether or not I kill an animal or what particular gear that I choose to take with me.It is whether I enjoy the experience of hunting regardless of what animals that I bring home or which gear I choose.I have been on hunts where I turned down many legal animals, and returned home with unfilled tags, but I still enjoyed the experience.
Lastly,I enjoy hunting far too much to be concerned with(or jealous of) what gear another hunt might own or use.If he enjoys the hunt, and hunts legally and with respect for the game he hunts,I am happy for him.
