Something I have noticed over the years...

Jeezus man, that aint cold :p . -35 celsius with the wind blowing is starting to get cold ;).

Yes it is Dave, when you walk around in shorts, singlet and thongs(jandals, for our NZ brethren) for the rest of the year, at the moment my winter attire is a pair of trackie pants, a shirt and a singlet, and because it IS cold I am also wearing boots, When I go to work my concession to the cold is a beanie.

Ps: since you seem interested in the job, make your way over here and come out with me, it may open your eyes and change some of your opinions, on the other hand you may simply enjoy yourself.(so far as I am aware the only other country in the world where this type of shooting is done is Namibia, I am led to believe they shoot gazelle professionally under a spotlight)

Oh hell J.S. the Indians here (plus a lotta inbred cretins in the country) been night hunting forever and still do, are etc...

If I could afford the plane ticket I would!!

It is extremely specialized(mind you some halfwits still insist on using junk), on still nights we shoot out to 280 yds(and trust me 280 yds is a god awful long way under a spotlight, even with a 24x), everything has to be head shot as we get fined AUST $300.00 per offense for body shot carcases. The number of kangaroo's varies(we dream of mobs) but generally they are in small groups of 3-7 or less(the exception being when a mob of reds move in), however irrigation generally holds large numbers when the surrounding country is dry.
The spotlight that I use is a nighteater(about AUST $900.00), and believe me nighteaters do lead the field.
As to how long the kangaroo's stick around, when they are dumb you could stick a cracker up their bum, light it and have time to get back to your truck, when they are mad(windy nights) they are gone when they see the light on the horizon.
Yes the 40XBR is a single shot, I find that it does not hamper me, most blokes with repeaters replace the last shot fired anyway, not a lot of difference from using a single shot, plus my ammo sits on the seat beside me.
On still nights when the kangaroo's are stupid, life is great, on windy nights when the kangaroo's are absolutely mad it would be cheaper to throw all the ammo in the gutter and go back to bed.
The upside of this job is that I do get to kill my customers, and it may be a dying industry, but I am making a killing.
Regards, J Stuart.

Okay so what do you do with the carcasses? Do they go to the dogfood factory? Do you go for big males? Females or what? Like it you run onto a bunch are you automatically trying to locate and take out the alpha female/male?

Is the skin used for tanning?

I don't know a damn thing about roos but I suppose there must be an alpha animal leading the bunch around, eh?

Yes 280 yard headshot on an animal would be some fine shooting in the darkness I guess. But the prairie dog hunters in Sask/Alta might not think it was all that tough... I dunno. I've only made 2 shots that long in my life on a big game animal and in both cases the critters obliged with nice broadside shots.

Hey give us some more info. What you are talking is so different from what we're doing it's interesting #### man!

Oh yeah, I meant to also ask, do you bother with those damn sal####er crocs or Asiatic water buff'? Any money in that? What about wild donkeys? I'm sure I read somewhere that there are wild donkeys in Australia that are fair game to shoot...

I guess you could never live here then. Thongs are not the best foot attire for hunting season around here.

Christ, it was almost zero here the other night. It is supposed to be spring/summer here.

Damn global warming :D

I live in New South Wales, hence NO crocodiles and NO water buffalo, NO banteng, not wild anyway, for these animals plus donkeys you would have to go to the Northern Territory or far North Queensland, for camels NW South Australia is your best bet.
I do not shoot for pet food all of my carcases go to human consumption, the hide is left on the carcase and sold by the Fauna dealer/abattoir to skin merchants, I believe some of the brand name running shoes utilize kangaroo hide.
When I find a mob I try to take the biggest each time(more money), unless doing so will disturb too many others, the trick is to get them to move in the direction you want them to go, that direction , by the way is anywhere but cover or over a fence, we have a 13 Kilo minimum in NSW anything above that is legal provided that the correct licence and tags are held on that particular property.
As to being able to afford a plane ticket, I too am fiscally embarrassed, otherwise, I can assure you, I would be sitting on my arse next to a camp fire in close proximity to you.

Dave, at least when it is cold you can put more clothing on, in summer here it occasionally gets into the high 40's, where do you go when you are already down to skin ?

Like many, I've seen much of it...

Guys that spend $$$ on thier truck, quad and camo, but thinkthat buying premium ammo is a "ripoff"

Guys that have s**tty EVERYTHING, but still are excellent hunters

Guys that top a $1500+++ rifle wiht a Tasco

etc etc

Here is how I spend my money, in no particular order

Good boots- You can't walk for long in crap, especially sidehills!!

Optics- Gotta find the stuff, so excellent binos are key. Spotting scope can vary depending on your needs

Good clothes- No use in shivering int he cold, or bakingin the sun

Good camp gear- Can range form a nice BBQ for the truck acess hunters to a flyweight tent and MSR stove for the hikers. Good GPS/Compass/map included...

Good knife- It shoudln't be a Rambo giant knife, a 4" blade is fine, but it's gotta be able to take an edge and keep it.

RELIABLE rifle- I can't stress this enough. You need a reliable rifle more than you need a rifle that will put every bullet in the same hole at 100 yards.
Yes, you want accuracy, but you want a BANG and a positive eject and feeding more.

PRACTICE AMMO- To ski well, you need to do it often. To play tennis well, you need to do it often. Same wiht guns and shooting. You want to shoot well? SHOOT ALOT!!

I still want a quad for fun runing around...But a $10 000 qud isn't worht as much to me as a $900 pair of custom boots!:D

Amen brother, Amen. ;)

Well I went out hunting the other afternoon and I couldn't see any, not one truck under 40,000 they're over 50,000. now I'm afraid of going out after the quads.
It's the person not the gun, the guys I know have big trucks (big lease payments) and nice guns, well nicer than mine.

Funny thing is I have hunted with beater trucks and borrowed rifles and I am no better then than I am now except for age and wisdom.

If you had that amount of gear on where I live, you would roast even on the coldest night, and I am glad that was not you, I thought for a moment that I was conversing with a penguin with no taste or style.
Just a question, how the hell do you go to the toilet in clothing and conditions like that, besides carefully.

Like yourself I have found that I do not enjoy living like a black fellow, I have found that decent equipment and a comfortable camp make for a much more enjoyable trip and I prefer not to flog my guts out when hunting, I leave that particular endeavour to the young and the stupid(enthusiastic).

Ps; I do not like work when I am being payed for it, I sure as hell am not going to do it in my free time.

I personally don't know anyone that considers an $800+ scope low end.I consider the vxIII to be overpriced, but not low end.

I'm not sure if you are bragging or complaining? Using a Vanguard, Leupold and a 5 year old Ford isn't exactly going over the top, but should work OK. Get a quad.:p

My point is what does a persons truck have to do with what kind of hunter they are ...or what type of gun?

So I m trying to point out different ends of the spectrum.
There are people who do not have what I have and make an assumtion to what kind of hunting enthusiast I am.

Then on the other end there are people who are quick to point out how crap and middle of the line my equipment is and therefore not in the same league.

If i won the lotto I might be hunting from a diesel pusher motorhome .
Conversly if I lose every thing I wil hunt with the cheapest rifle and scope I could afford.
You will never see me post anything about judging people by the gear they do or don't have.
