So I've owned my 2007 Norinco for 2-3 years and haven't shot it up until this past weekend. I always wanted to wait to get the headspace checked but I went ahead and did something stupid...I shot it anyway. I loaded one round in the magazine and proceeded to chamber it, then VERY nervously pull the trigger. BAM! It worked (sort of). AND I was still alive!

It appears that I have a single shot M14 because it won't cycle/eject. I assume it's something to do with the gas system but I was hoping someone here would know what the problem is or had a similar issue in the past. I've read the .pdf from the M14 clinic and found no answers, nor was I successful in a search on here. Can anyone help?

It wasn't just a one time thing either. I tried a couple more times with a single round and got the same result.

I'm betting the gas valve is closed. :D Slot should be at right angles to barrel.

make sure the flat side is lined up with the gas tube cut

I think gas "on" is a vertical slot....

...and it wasn't vertical when I checked. It's back in the correct position

As far as I can tell it was/is lined up properly. The flat part should be on the top when it slides in. It looks as though the gas valve was the issue.

Thanks for the replies. Now the long wait to go test it out again.

Am I nuts for shooting the rifle without getting the headspace checked??

No, I wasn't at the range alone.

I don't understand what you mean when you say it's a common prank. What's the prank?

For all you M14 lovers who have been to my clinic, :D you get this local prank of mine (and ours now that one of you Interior BC dudes switched MY gas OFF  )

Usually I charge a case of beer to fix your rifle (ha ha ha) after someone (likely your best friends) turned off your gas when the rifle was racked at the gun club. :nest:

Heeeere kitty, kitty, kitty!

Cheers,
Barney

happened to me when I started shooting mine. Turns out my gas valve was off. Easy fix.
I was a little iffy the first time I pulled the trigger, but now I'll go hog-wild and just assume that if it does explode, I'll die happy.

M14

My 2007 M14 came out of the box in 2007, and I have fired thousands of 7.62 RDS,The only thing I have ever done to this rifle was clean and I put on a US GI Stock.Greatest rifle ever

The Chinese make a good rifle and their 1911A1 pistols are even better.

IMAT:)
