Several countries experimented with 'portable' shields in WWI. Largely angular pieces of metal with a port for looking/shooting, men were expected to push some of them through no man's land firing at the enemy. I can remember one design so heavy they put wheels on it..... The only real success they had were the plates snipers and sharpshooters used on the edges of the trench for cover.
