Hi all,

Right now have 2 Sako's (1) 300 Win Mag 75 Synthetic and (2) 300 Wing Limited Edition wood stock. In addition to these I also have a Christensen arms carbon fiber hunting rifle in 300 win mag.

Right now I am very very pleased with the Sako and the Carbon Fiber but was wondering if there is a better over all hunting rifle, I may buy one but also to satisfy my curiosity.

Thanks!

What exactly do you mean by "better overall"? More accuracy? Lighter? More expensive? More pretty?

If your Sako and Christensen aren't satisfactory, you might want to shell out several thousand dollars and get a full-blown custom rifle. At least that way you'll get exactly what you want.

Yeha, it depends on how you define "Better"

Me, I think that if you are going to shell out $1500 for a Sako, why not shell out a few more bucks and get a rifle built for you, to your specifications?

There are plentyof good gunsmiths out there that woudl be happy to do this for you. Only problem with custom guns is you often have to wait a little, but good things take time!;) :)

A couple of years ago Guns and Ammo Magazine was given a C. Sharps 1874 "Boss" model to test and review, they said" it was probably the finest rifle we have had come through the magazine"!

thanks, I am satisfied with what i have just wondering if there is a worth while upgrade on the market.

@ p-17 all of the above :)
@ ben ... i hear there really nice and was looking at the catalog but they look much to old school for my liking.

Is your question "is there a better calibre than the 300 Win Mag? Depends on what you want it to do. Those are all very nice rifles, the only thing is they are heavy, to complete your collection you could buy a Sako AV in 300 win mag to save some weight.

HS Precision makes some nice guns. I really want to get my hands on a Cooper one of these days (those are really more varmint rigs though).

Or you could go for a REALLY nice gun and get a Rigby or a Holland and Holland. You might need to mortgage your house though

anybody who asks this question just buys guns because the most expensive one is the best. the mroe expensive rifle you own, the better hunter you are, everyone knows that

Cogito, if you are looking for something different, try one of the Blaser rifles. While the newer R 93 (straight pull bolt) model is nice, try and find one of the older R 84 models (60 degree bolt) like this one:

http://www.dawsonsdoubles.com/details.asp?ID=858

They are very well built, accurate plus, and use a switch barrel system, interchangeable bolt face and a "swap out" internal magazine to accommodate any cartridge / calibre combination you may desire. A Blaser set up for a .308 can simply switch barrels to use a .243 or 22-250 as they are based on .308 brass. To switch to a .375 H&H requires not only the barrel swap, but the bolt face and magazine as well. An interesting option if you want something "better".

That is the route that I chose after owning sakos and weatherbys.Choose an action,a stock fitted to your dimensions,a barrel length and contour, the overal weight of the gun,and any options that you want.

Thanks for all the input guys. Like I said before I’m not certainly looking to buy something right now but seeing what else is available in a Sako + range. btw forgot to mention I also recently acquired a Sako .338 lapua.

From the looks of it ill just do some mods to my Sako 75 300 win mag. What do you think about a carbon fiber stock? Do you think it can affect my guns accuracy/performance in a negative way?

You mention Sako+ range... I think that Sauer is worth taking a look at. Anyone who has handled one will yell you that the bolt moves like a buttered ballerina! Some offer changeable barrels as well. Check out the 202 or the 90. You won't be disappointed.

Why mess around with the Sako, its one of the few off the shelf guns that are actually worth something. If your just hunting with these guns they are all more than satifactory. They are hunting rifles not sniper rilfes, and don't need to hollow out at dime @ 500m. If your looking for something that is simply the best of the best then look at Holland and Holland or Rigby and Son, then work your way down. I suspect the going rate for one of those would be the price of a small car, or a large one, you'd have to check.

Try Rocky Mountain Rifle, Corlane Sporting goods, for $3000 or so you'll have a top notch custom. Ed Brown, HS Precicion, and others build very nice hunting rifles. Hell, for the money, Kimber makes a great rifle as well.

If its just making this years game fall down, then why change what you have? The rifles you've listed are some of the upper crust of the off the shelf croud. Why mess with something that works

You could spend a great deal of money and end up with an inferior rifle in a quest for the perfect rig. If there are short coming in the rifles you own it is time to correct those short coming with custom work, or have a custom rifle built to fill a particular niche.

You could try Corlane or PGW for a custom built hunting rifle but even then it is still just a hunting rifle you are after. You may shrink you groups from 1" to 1/2" at 100 yards, it still kills a moose all the same.
