We got this bear this afternoon. My sons first bear he shot with a .270 at 250 yards.

That was in 1968.

He was feeding in an oat field behind the house that Marg and I were renting from a Finnlander, about fifteen miles West of Kirkland Lake. The load was a 130 gr Winchester Silvertip ahead of a case full of 50 cents a pound H4831. I had practiced with that load in my Husqvarna 5000 all Spring and Summer.

We had just finished supper when he showed up. Talk about excited. My heart was pounding all the time I was stalking him. I'm sure mbogo3 knows what I am talking about, because I remember watching my son shoot his first bear, too. I was as excited as the day I shot mine! :D

x2 on the lack of the smiles, congrats to you and your son. Great shooting. My first big game animal was a black bear as well.

He's shot 1/2 dozen + or so WT/Mule deer and a moose previously. We can start e'm here in AB at age 12.....His younger brother shot a WT each of the past two seasons since coming of age.One shot each with my 700 classic .250 Sav...........this mentoring is almost more fun than hunting myself..............Harold
