Soo Many Remington 700s

in 308 barrels from 20-24" are becoming the norm until you start shooting magnums like the 7 mag, 300 mag , 338 etc then they recommend 26-28".

I would go with the SPS Varmint or Tactical, unless you are a serious shooter or have lots of money to spend.

If you find an SPS on sale they can be a real steal. I'm living proof :D

I found a SPSV on sale at an excellent price, then found a LTR stock also at a very good price. I will be getting the barrel cut and maybe even rechambered and still be coming out at less then the regular retail of the actual LTR.

All I will be lacking thanks to my patience and effort are flutes and parkerizing....

Not bad, I think.... Go with one of the SPS' I say.

So what I am getting here, is the main difference between the different models is the Barrel length and on a few models a Higher quality Stock. But the quality of the barrel itself is all the same?

So if I am going to re-barrel it, shop for the best stock? If I just want to shoot the best combination of stuff, get the 5r? What if I wanted to rebarrel and get a Mcmillan stock? Should I even bother buying a whole gun, or just purchase the parts??

Herein lies the quandry....

Remmy actions are exceptional. You will not find a better factory action to build upon for precision purposes.

Ergonomics is an essential component of precision shooting. With the exception of their VLS thumbhole, none of the Remmy stocks is EXCEPTIONAL as a prone or bechrest stock. The 5R is the best of an off-hand bunch, but is not strictly designed nor particularly well-suited to prone shooting.

As far as actions go, a Remmy 700 is a Remmy 700. The stocks CAN work, but for optimal results you wouold want to change the Stock Remmy offering.

The Stock on a VLS thumbhole or an XR100 is (near as I can tell) Identical to a Boyd's thumbhole, but with better finishing.

SO... for 2 grand, you can have an SPS, a Boyd's stock, a cutom barrel and all the gunsmithng and money left over to buy a great base or a great trigger, and potentially it will be as good as any gun you will find.

This is what CyaN1de is using in Sacramento as we speak.
