In at AEI as well. It sounds like it might be coming in sooner than I imagined, but I sure am not complaining. Time will tell though, it's not in my mitts yet, but here's hoping.

Does anyone know for sure if the RPD design is limited to 5 rnd belts, or can regular-length belts (50 rnds IIRC) be used?

Yea, wouldn't the belts for these NOT fall under the exemption? Belt feed is no fun with only 5 rounds.

Don't the belts themselves have to be made prior to 1945 or something? I'm not 100% sure on that one but if that's the case, you could likely find old belts on EBay

I believe the RPD uses full length belts, they're pre-1945 designs. However, now there are mutterings of the RCMP lab saying that only pre-1945 MANUFACTURE belts being accepted, since they're getting a bit worried about the new belt feds coming. Nothing confirmed yet. I'm quite interested in the RPD

I have not heard that rumour/muttering. AFAIK, the rule is still designed 1945 or earlier.
However, I think the RCMP did say that even though the gun is referred to as a RPD-45, they fell it didnt really get going until several years later, so does not qualify.

LOL - I'd like to see that stand up in court. It's called the RPD-44 for a reason.

The RPD actually SAW SERVICE in 1944. The belts were invented and produced in 1943. This is fact, not opinion, and the RCMP is bound by legislation, not whim or fancy. the law clearly states DESIGNED.

From the Crminal Code of Canada, Part 4, para (f):

(1) Any cartridge magazine […] is of the “belt” type consisting of a fabric or metal belt, is not a reproduction and was originally designed or manufactured for the purpose of feeding cartridges into a automatic firearm of a type that was in existence before 1945.

So in other words, if it's original military production, it's golden because the RPD was "in existence" before 1945. As far as the law is concerned, if even ONE example was "in existence" prior to 1945, their hands are tied.

EDIT: I do NOT intend to ridicule the moderator's post, when I re-read the above, I see it could maybe be construed this way. My intent is to ridicule the RCMP lab's supposed argument - I agree with tootall on what he said
