Soot on case neck

Hey all,

Quick question, I've worked up a load for my 7mm rm, 64gr of WS780 behind a 150gr nosler etip and been getting consistent sub moa shots at 100yds. Noticed soot being left around the neck of the case, primer is fine, no changes. I've heard that this could be a sign of low pressure, should I continue using this load or should I be increasing the load to get a little more pressure to close the gap to produce no soot?

Kevin

Soot on the neck is completely normal, if it's leaking onto the shoulder and beyond then it may be low pressure.

If it's making a sine wave like pattern this is actually ideal.

Pics of the necks may help make a better assesment.

Below is normal: (Uploaded 2 pics, one doesn't want to show itself in my photobucket)

Let's see if 2nd pic works.

I always wondered if this would wreck a sizer die?

I try to clean it off before sizing just to make sure

Yeah....that's probably a good idea. ;)

If I'm in a hurry to reload some brass that hasn't been tumbled I use some 000 steel wool to clean the necks before sizing.

One more example (Pic I originally wanted to post but thought I had deleted from PB)
This is the sine wave pattern I mentioned earlier.

The soot I'm talking about is just like in the pictures you posted, it's only on the neck. Even some of the brass I have the soot doesn't even make it all the way down the neck. I'll have to take a closer examination to see if I have the "wavey" look. I'd hate to change they load with it being as accurate as it is. I heard with etips that they have a lot of high pressure so I kept the load to a minimum because it doesn't have the slots to relive pressure like the barnes bullets. I'm really starting to like this bullet.

I always take a little wad of 000 steel wool with me to the range when I shoot.

Immediately after I fire a shot and extract the case, I wipe that soot off the neck of my cases.

It is much easier to remove right away than if you leave it on for a while. [seems to adhere more if left for more than a few minutes]

This protects my dies, and allows a few moments before the next shot.

Regards, Dave.

If it looks like the above pics....keep shooting them. No issues whatsoever.
