soot on casing

I just went and shot my 6.5 at the range to get it ready for the hunting season. Every reload left powder residue on the casing (I shot about 50 rnds).
Now I read a little bit yesterday, and I was told that this is caused by not enough pressure to create a seal. well I've shot this load before (140 gr SMK, 44grs R.L22) and it has never done this. I have had leakage before, but not this bad. Could it be a problem with my rifle??

I do not think you are underloaded. How many times fired are the brass?

Some sooting is nomal on the neck. If the sooting is on the shoulder or body of the case my bet is the brass is overhard. You state not seeing the problem before and it may indicate hardened brass on your current loads. If so, time to toss and replace or explore annealing if you are handy.

How far down the case do you see soot ?

Either way that's a fairly anemic load and as you guessed...its not likely not creating a proper seal, When I was shooting a Model 96 such as your self I was pushing 140gr. bullets (GK's and NP's) with 46.5-46.7 gr. of RL-22 . I would work up carefully and you should not notice soot far down the case.
 
I started reloading fairly recently for my 6.5x55. I found 42.5 grns of RL 22 produced lots of soot on the outside of the case. My notes aren't clear, but I think there may have been some soot at 43.5 grns as well. By 44.5 grns it was clear. This was with 140 gr HPBT bullets and brand new Lapua brass. OAL was loaded to 3.200" which is longer than the book called for and could have contributed to lower pressure?

If the brass was fired in the rifle previously without issue I would disagree with the headspace theory.

I load 48gr of H4831SC in my 6.5-08 so your load of RL 22 seems a little on the low side.

I will have to reboot my computer and then I will put your load through Quickload and see what it gives me for pressure.

Assuming you are shooting 6.5x55?
 
Here is what quickload is showing for pressure on your 44gr load

Looks like 46-48gr will get you into the yellow/pink zone

If you are neck sizing only and not using a FL size die, pressure will be even lower since the numbers posted below are on a SAAMI spec case and not tailored to your actual numbers as chances are your case will be bigger than specs in Quickload.

I am running 46gr Re22 with 120gr ttsx. 1st shot good 2nd 2.5"s away, 3rd shot touching 1st shot. Not sure whats going on..
