Sorry Guys... Best Bear Ammo For 44 Mag And 45/70?

If your not reloading look at the Hornady 325g flex tip in the 45-70. Never used it my self but know some one that does with good results.
I use the 350g Hornady flat point loaded to 1900 fps out of my guide gun. Good penetration.

A few years ago I had to shoot a blackie that got into my neighbour's alpacas in the middle of the night. I was using Hornady 265 gr. FP (intended for the 444 Marlin) in my 1894. Worked very well as the bear dropped like a log, although i may have also got lucky and hit the spine. I had asked Hornady about these bullets and as I recall they said that the min. velocity for expansion was about 1500 fps. I think mine were doing around 1600.

A week or so later I went to the range and did a test into wet newsprint with the Hornady 265 FP, XTP 240 gr. and Bullet Barn 240 gn hard-cast RNFP. FWIW, the results are below. This won't help the o/p as he doesn't reload but I thought it might be of interest anyway.

The hard-cast blew through everything and for all I know may still be going.

Funny how the bullets always stopped on a page with an ad for a law firm.

That was interesting... thanks.

I just came across this Gunblast review of the bronze-cased bullets from Belt Mountain Enterprises. I'd heard of these before as being virtually indestructible and offering superior penetration.
I doubt they're available up here, though. This review is on the 475 Linebaugh in a Ruger Nº1 but they make a range of big-bore bronze bullets. Lathe-turned and therefore not cheap. :)
