Hey Guys,

Lately as I’ve been shooting more black powder in my Uberti and Sharps firearms, I’ve become quite interested in acquiring an original 1861 Springfield or 1853 Enfield rifle. To those of you that have original rifles up here, what is the Canadian market like for these? Did you import from the US via an importer (do you even need an importer?) or did you source here in Canada?

I know P&S has a few 1853s and Joe Salter HAD a nice 1853, but what other reputable dealers are in Canada for these arms?

Thanks!

Good day. It's a real challenge to acquire and sell Civil War arms in Canada. I have never found anything satisfactory in Canada. When I wanted to sell my Springfield and Enfield rifles some time back I found the Canadian dealers were anything but knowledgeable or reasonable. I sent them south for auction. Because of the historical importance of these items I suggest you do your homework. By all means shop in Canada and prove me wrong. But also go to the Civil War Dealers website, Heritage Auctions and Morphys Auctions to see what has been sold and what is available. There is an abundance of information. What you are looking for are historic items. Take your time. Buy something that you will never doubt. When you get the right one you will know. Good luck.

Originals can be not always be the best shooters due to poor storage, lack of cleaning and wear. I just picked up a new Perdersoli 1853 and it's an excellent quality repro and better looking than even the older Pedersoli's 1853's. I would say the new ones are almost on par with the old Parker Hale's minus a few sharp edges.

If you still want an original keep an eye out on these sites

Thanks for the replies guys. I shoot my Uberti and Pedersoli rifles quite a bit and have really gotten into blackpowder shooting over the past year. I was fortunate enough to pick up an original 50-70 conversion 1863 Sharps Carbine which I have shot, though really its more of a collectors piece then regular shooter given its age. The more reading I do on the 1860's and 1870's, the more interested I've become in acquiring antiques, more for collection then regular shooting.

Potentially a dumb question, but are there any special requirements with ordering/buying from the United States given that original muskets are (I believe) legally classed as antiques both here and there?
